This Easy Double Crochet Solid Granny Square is designed to be the base for all of the winter activity appliqués in my Winter Activities Crochet-Along — but it also works beautifully as a simple, stand-alone square for blankets, scarves, pillows, and more.
Whether you’re joining the CAL or just want a classic, beginner-friendly square to add to your crochet toolbox, this pattern is a great place to start.
Unlike classic granny squares with big gapes between clusters, this version stays nice and solid with just a little openness at the corners, giving you a smooth, solid fabric that’s perfect for stitching appliqués on top or sewing squares together for a cozy winter blanket.
A Square That Grows With You
One of the best things about this pattern is how flexible it is. Once you complete the first two rounds, you’ll see just how repetitive and easy the pattern becomes. You can stop after a few rounds for a small square, or keep going to create larger blocks for afghans, throws, or even garments.
It’s the kind of pattern you can quickly memorize. Perfect for relaxing, travel, or evenings with yarn and a good show.
Yarn & Colors Used
For the photo and video tutorials, I’m using Red Heart Super Saver (worsted weight yarn) in the colors Turqua and Pool Blue. These icy, winter-inspired shades make a perfect backdrop for all the snowy appliqués that will be added throughout the year in our Winter Activities 2026 CAL.
Turqua is also the first color for the first square in my Winter Activities Blanket, helping set the tone for the full collection of winter-themed squares to come.
You can absolutely keep your square one solid color, or use multiple colors for stripes — both look great with this stitch pattern.

- Size H (5.0 mm) Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle
Solid Granny Square Pattern
Round 1
Make a Magic Ring.
Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet), then make 2 double crochet into the ring.
Chain 2 (first corner).
3 double crochet, chain 2 (second corner)
3 double crochet, chain 2 (third corner)
3 double crochet, chain 2 (fourth corner)
Join to the top of the beginning chain 3 and pull the ring tight.
Round 2
Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet and will count as your first DC for every round).
Double crochet in each stitch from the previous round until you reach the first chain-2 corner.
In each corner: 2 DC, chain 2, 2 DC.
Continue working double crochet across each side and repeating the corner pattern in every corner.
Join to the top of the beginning chain 3.
Rounds 3–8
Continue repeating Round 2 until your square has a total of 8 rounds, which will give you approximately a 10-inch square.
If you are using this square for another project, feel free to keep crocheting in rounds to make it as large as you’d like.
