Sunrise Sweater Crochet Pattern – Easy Chunky Blanket Yarn Sweater

January 30, 2026

I couldn’t wait another minute to share this one with you! The Sunrise Sweater is officially finished using the brand new Bernat Blanket Ethereal Stripes yarn (Target exclusive), and I am completely obsessed with how these colors worked up. It truly looks like a soft sunrise sky wrapped around your shoulders. The cropped length and slightly flared cuffs give it such a fun, modern shape that feels balanced and flattering on me, and even though it’s made with super bulky yarn, it’s warm and plush without feeling heavy or overwhelming. Prefer a longer fit? You can easily add more rounds to the body to customize the length. The bright, cheerful colors and cushy texture make this one of those pieces that feels like wearing a little bit of sunshine.

This is a super chunky, beginner-friendly sweater that works up quickly and lets the yarn do all the color magic with no color changes needed!

I first shared this sweater while it was still in progress, and now it’s officially finished! The sleeves and final length are complete, and the pattern now includes all the details to finish yours too.

I used a total of three balls of Bernat Blanket Ethereal Stripes yarn for my XS size sweater. One ball was used for the main body, and I worked from the outer end of the skein so the color sequence would stay consistent as it flowed downward. For the sleeves, I used nearly a full ball for each one. To keep the colors looking continuous, I paid attention to where the color changes landed — for example, I attached the yarn at the sleeve opening when the yarn was in the orange section so the sleeve color would blend naturally with the body. Because this is a self-striping yarn, your color placement may vary slightly, but you can control the look by starting your yarn at a similar color point if you want a more seamless transition.

The XS size (this is what I’m wearing) has been worked through, and the remaining sizes are graded using the same proportions. If you make one, I would LOVE your feedback (especially on fit and sleeve length)!

Yarn + Materials

  • Yarn: 3-6 balls of Bernat Blanket Ethereal Stripes (super bulky #6)
Shown in the Sunrise colorway. I am using 3 balls for the size XS pictures.
    >>> Shop Bernat Blanket Ethereal Stripes HERE on Target.com. <<<
NOTE: Any Bernat Blanket Yarn will work for this sweater!
  • Hook: Size K (6.5 mm) crochet hook (or size needed for gauge)
  • Tapestry needle

This yarn is soft, plush, and does all the striping for you. Each sweater will look slightly different depending on where your color changes land and that’s part of the magic!

I used Bernat Blanket Ethereal Stripes in the Sunrise colorway for this sweater, which gives those fun, bright, self-striping color changes without having to switch yarns. But this pattern works beautifully with any Bernat Blanket yarn! You can use a solid color for a classic cozy look, hold two colors and switch them yourself, or create your own stripe sequence. The simple stitch pattern really lets the texture and color of the yarn shine, so feel free to get creative and make it totally your own.

Sizing

Pattern is written for: XS, S, M, L, XL

This sweater has a relaxed fit. It’s worked in simple double crochet rounds from the top down to create a wide body panel, then the yarn is attached at the arm openings to creating the sleeves.

If you’ve never made a sweater before, this is a GREAT first garment project.

Fit & Length Adjustment:
This sweater is designed to be easily customizable, so don’t be afraid to make it your own! You can add more rounds to the body if you prefer a longer sweater, or stop early for a cropped look. The sleeves can also be made longer or shorter… just continue working rounds until you reach your desired length. Since everyone’s torso and arm length is different, adjusting the number of rounds is the best way to get a fit that feels just right for you.

I can’t wait to see your Sunrise Sweaters! Customize the length, sleeves, and colors to make it completely your own, and don’t forget to share your version. Your feedback helps improve the pattern for everyone.

Funding my betting account has never been easier since I switched to this platform that fully supports OPay and PalmPay for instant transactions. I used to wait hours for deposits to reflect on other sites but here winwin ng the money appears in seconds allowing me to bet on live matches without delay. It is a relief to find a service that understands the Nigerian banking system and processes withdrawals to local accounts like Access and Zenith with such speed and reliability that I no longer worry about my funds getting stuck.

This sweater honestly reminds me of when I was working as an RBT and had to stay comfortable during long sessions, especially in colder rooms. Cozy layers really make a difference when you’re on your feet all day. Love how simple and wearable this design is.

I came across this RBT beginner guide back then that helped me understand the certification process better:

This pattern looks so cozy! I love how chunky yarn really makes the sweater pop and keeps it warm without being complicated to crochet. I actually ordered some similar chunky yarn from Modlily https://modlily.pissedconsumer.com/customer-service.html and it worked perfectly for a quick project like this. Definitely adding this Sunrise Sweater to my to-make list!

Absolutely stunning colors, Sarah! The ‘Sunrise’ theme is so fitting. I’m currently traveling through the mountains in India near the Himalayas, and the actual sunrises here have these exact same orange and gold tones. This chunky sweater looks perfect for the chilly mornings we have here during our spiritual treks. Definitely pinning this for my next project!”

This Sunrise Sweater is a masterpiece, Sarah! It’s so cozy that I’m actually worried, if I recommend this to my team at https://www.chardhampackage.com/ as a return gift for our trekking clients, they might spend the whole trip napping in their tents instead of looking at the mountains! But honestly, for those chilly Himalayan mornings. Truly inspiring work!

I really enjoyed this post! The Sunrise Sweater pattern looks both cozy and stylish, and the use of chunky blanket yarn makes it perfect for beginners who want to create something warm and comfortable. I love how handmade clothing allows people to express creativity while focusing on comfort and quality materials. The same attention to craftsmanship can also be seen in traditional fashion pieces like a mens lederhosen outfit, where durable fabrics and classic design make the garment both functional and timeless. Thanks for sharing such a helpful and inspiring pattern!
