Move over Halloween… Red Heart Super Glow Yarn isn’t just for spooky season anymore! This adorable crochet firefly proves that glow-in-the-dark yarn is just as magical during the summer months.
Crocheted with Red Heart Super Glow Yarn in Aurora Yellow, this little bug has a glowing belly that shines after being exposed to bright light or sunshine. Pair that with oversized cartoon safety eyes and and you’ve got a crochet project that’s bursting with personality.
Make It Glow!
The secret to this firefly’s magical glow is Red Heart Super GlowYarn. During the day it looks like a bright neon yellow-green, but after charging under a lamp, flashlight, or a few minutes of sunshine, it glows beautifully in the dark.
I used the color Aurora Yellow, but Super Glow Yarn comes in several fun colors if you’d like to give your firefly a different look. Imagine a blue, pink, green, or purple glowing bug lighting up the night!

After crocheting your firefly, simply place it under a bright light for a few minutes before turning off the lights to see the glow come to life.
Those Eyes!
The oversized cartoon safety eyes are one of my favorite details. They instantly transform this little bug from cute to absolutely irresistible! If you prefer a more realistic firefly, you can always substitute standard black safety eyes or embroider the eyes instead.

Materials:
– Red Heart Super Glow Yarn (I recommend Aurora Yellow)

– Red Heart Super Saver in Cafe Latte (head/body) and Buff Beige (Wings)
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Cartoon Safety Eyes
– Polyfil Fiber Stuffing
– Strand of black yarn to stitch on a smile
– Tapestry Needle
Finishes Size = Approx 6 inches tall x 3 inches wide (not including wings)
Body/Head:
Pattern works from bottom up.
Starting with Super Glow Yarn
Round 1: Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1 (10 SC)
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 3: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 4: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Rounds 5-8: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1(30 SC)
Round 9: SC Decrease, SC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
Round 10: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
Round 11: SC Decrease, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (18 SC)
Round 12: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (18 SC)
Join in Brown yarn, chain 1.
Start stuffing with Poly-fil and continue until the end of the pattern.
Round 13: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (18 SC)
Round 14: 2 SC in first, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
Round 15: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
Round 16: 2 SC in first, SC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Rounds 17-20: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 21: SC Decrease, SC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
Pause to add the safety eyes and stitch on a small smile.
Round 22: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
Round 23: SC Decrease, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (18 SC)
Round 24: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (18 SC)
Round 25: SC Decrease, SC in next, repeat around, join (12 SC)
Round 26: SC Decrease until closed.
Antennae:
join in brown yarn at top of head around stitch from second to last round.
Chain 8, 3 HDC in 3rd chain from hook, slip stitch the rest of the way down chain and join back to top of head in same space where you started. Weave in ends. One antennae made.
Make second Antennae a few stitch over on other side of head.
Arms (make 2):
with brown yarn
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2-4: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (6 SC)
Round 5: SC Decrease, SC in next, repeat around, (4 SC)
at this point, it’s too hard to join and chain 1 so crochet in circles.
Round 6-7: SC in each stitch around.
Fasten off leaving long tail. No need to stuff.
Stitch arms onto either side of body where glow yarn and brown yarn meet.\
Wings:
with beige yarn (or white or gray)
Larger wing (make 2):
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2-5: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (10 SC)
Round 6: SC Decrease, SC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 7-9: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (8 SC)
Round 10: SC Decrease, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 11: SC in each stitch around, fasten off leaving long tail.
No need to stuff.
Smaller Wing (make 2):
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2-5: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (10 SC)
Round 6: SC Decrease, SC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 7-8: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (8 SC)
fasten off leaving long tail.
No need to stuff.
Layer one large wing slightly over one small wing so they fan outward like the firefly is in flight. Stitch the two wings together, then repeat for the second set. Finally, sew both wing sets onto the back of the head where the brown body meets the glowing abdomen.

This may be one of my favorite glow-in-the-dark projects yet. It’s quick to crochet, full of personality, and such a fun way to use Red Heart Super Glow Yarn outside of Halloween.
