Crochet Bunny Ears

February 28, 2019

This project started with an idea to make our 7-month-old dog Max bunny ears for the Cadbury Bunny Tryouts! I purchased a strip of elastic band to use as the “headband” portion thinking it would stay on the dogs head better. Max wasn’t too happy wearing the ears (despite lots of treats and praise for letting mom take a photo!) so I take the ears off of him and realize the elastic band has pretty much turned into a scrunchie! Which is so perfect to jazz up Zoe’s ponytail! Of course you could also stitch the ears onto a headband like I did on THIS Cat in the Hat Crochet Headband!

Materials:
– Bernat Super Value in Natural or White
– Bernat Super Value in Sky Blue (or any other color for the inside ear)
Shop all colors HERE on Yarnspirations.com
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Elastic (found at Michaels Craft Store)
– Hot Glue Gun
– Pipe Cleaners (two)
– Headband (optional)
– Tapestry Needle

Bunny Ears (Outside Ear): Make two
with white or cream yarn..
Chain 5, SC in 2nd chain from hook and in each across, ch 1, turn (4 SC)
Row 2: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 2 stitches, 2 SC in last stitch, ch 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 3: SC in each stitch across, ch 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 4: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 4 stitches, 2 SC in last stitch, ch 1, turn (8 SC)
Row 5-10: SC in each stitch across, ch 1, turn (8 SC)
This is where you can keep making rows of SC to make the ears longer. Keep in mind, the longer the ear, the floppier it will become (which would be cute too!)
Row 11: SC decrease, SC in next 4 stitches, SC decrease in last stitch, ch 1, turn
Row 12: SC in each stitch across, ch 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 13: SC decrease, SC in next 2 stitches, SC decrease in last stitch, ch 1 turn
Row 14: SC in each stitch across, ch 1, turn (4 SC)
Row 15: Make 2 SC decreases, ch 1, turn
Row 16: SC decrease, ch 1, and continue to sc around the edge of the entire ear. Slip stitch to first SC to join. Leave long tail to sew ears together.

Bunny Ears (Inside Ear): Make two
Follow the pattern above but with your accent color (such as blue as pictured). When you get to row 16, make your SC decrease and then switch color to white/cream and continue to SC around the entire ear.

To make the ears sturdy you will want to hot glue a pipe cleaner along the inside edge of the ear. I only had green pip cleaners on hand but you will probably want to use something a little more neutral in color.

Stitch ears on top of elastic or headband. You will want to SC around the elastic or headband first.

A DNA test revealed that Max is a chihuahua/mini poodle/terrier mix! He is a sweetie and loves to distract me from my crochet with lots of cuddles and naps on my lap!

I can’t wait to see how you use these bunny ears!

I love the ear pattern for this. I used it to attach to hats, and made the ears extra long and floppy! Definitely beginner friendly!
