Pumpkins in a Row Crochet Hat

Remember my Hearts in a Row Hat? Well now we have Pumpkins in a Row! Festive for the Fall season, the stripe in this hat is meant to look like pumpkins lined up on a vine. A must wear to the pumpkin patch and all your Autumn activities! Sizes Newborn to Adult pattern available below.

Gather your favorite fall yarn colors! Any worsted weight yarn will work. I dug around my stash and decided to combine a few different brands and colors.
Red Heart with Love in Tangerine (main hat color)
Bernat Super Value in Pumpkin (pumpkins and skinny stripes) ACK! I completely forgot this color was discontinued. Red Heart Super Saver in color Carrot is VERY similar!

Note: Pattern works from the top down

Special Stitch= Pumpkin Cluster
Yarn over pull through stitch, pull through 2 loops (making the first half of your DC), yarn over and pull up through same stitch, pull through 2 loops, you should now have 3 loops on your hook, yarn over pull up through the same stitch, pull through 2 loops, you should now have 4 loops on your hook, yarn over pull up through the same stitch, pull through 2 loops, you should now have 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 5 stitches.

Special Stitch = Elongated Double Crochet (Long DC)
When you are working your DC stitches between the pumpkin clusters, one of your double crochets will reach down under the vine and to DC in round 6. Yarn over pull through bringing up that loop up to the height of the double crochet before it. Yarn over pull through two loops. Yarn over pull through last two loops.

Round 2: 2 DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (22 DC)

RIBBED BORDER:
Please be sure and watch THIS TUTORIAL from my friend Daisy Farm Crafts on how to make a single crochet ribbed border. I love this technique because you don’t need to sew the ribbing on separately, it is crochet right onto the edge of the hat! It’s basically a chain 7 (or however long/short your want your ribbed border), SC in each chain until you get back to the hat edge, slip stitch in two stitches along the hat edge and then SC in the back loops of the ribbing and repeat. She has a VERY easy tutorial to follow and you can use this border on many different projects.

When you’ve finished the ribbed border along the edge of the hat you can slip stitch the seam together.

Adding the Stem: With brown yarn, surface slip stitch a stem between the top of the pumpkin cluster and the space above it where the yellow DC is. Leave a long loop and bring your hook to the top of the next pumpkin, grab loop of yarn from the previous pumpkin but be sure you are hooking it underneath the hat, surface slip stitch stem between the top of the pumpkin and the space above it, continue along each pumpkin cluster.

Want to make this as a headband instead of a hat? Easy! Chain the stitch count needed to reach the largest increase round. So in the newborn hat you will need 44 stitches (child hat 64 Stitches, etc) so chain 44 and join to first chain to make a circle, chain 2 and start with a round of DC stitches in tangerine, then continue on following the pattern from the SC striped row in the pumpkin color.
