Say hello to Chilly the Penguin, the newest member of the Quackers family! If you’ve been around for a while, you already know how much I love taking one well-written pattern and transforming it into multiple adorable characters just by switching up the colors. First came Quackers (classic yellow duck), then Waddles (the white duck), then Puddles (our mallard friend)… and now, just in time for winter, Chilly has waddled onto the scene!
The best part?
It’s the exact same Quackers pattern — just worked in black with simple white eye patches!

This means if you already love the shape, size, and squishable softness of Quackers, you’re going to adore turning him into a penguin. I’ll include the quick eye-patch pattern below, and then you’re off and running!
I stuck with my go-to plush favorite:
Bernat Blanket Yarn in:
- Coal (Black) for the body and head, wings and tail
- White for the face patches
- Gold for the beak and feet

You only need ONE 300g skein of black for the entire penguin!
This is such a great stash project, budget-friendly, and perfect for gifting season.
If you want to get creative, here are a few variations I’m absolutely loving:
- Baby Penguin Version: Use Gray for the body, black for the head, and white eye patches. So soft and sweet!
- Classic Penguin with Belly Patch: Work Chilly all in black, then add a simple white oval patch on the tummy.
- Holiday Penguin: Swap the beak and feet color for red, green, or even sparkly yarn for a festive twist. Maybe even a red scarf?!
Same pattern, endless possibilities!
Chilly the Penguin Eye Patch Pattern (make 2):
with Bernat Blanket White yarn
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 12 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 HDC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (24 HDC)
Round 3: 2 DC in first 3, 2 HDC in next, SC in next 16, 2 HDC in next, 2 DC in last 3, join, fasten off leaving long tail.
The bottom of the eye patches will be the part with the DC stitches because it’s more boxy and the top is rounded. Add black safety eyes to eye patches. Stitch eye patches onto front of the head so they are touching. Then add the beak over the middle bottom of the eye patches.
Don’t forget the complete pattern for this project is available as “Quackers the Duck” and then you will add the eye patch pattern listed above.
