Holly Jolly Christmas Chaos Crochet Blanket

October 22, 2026

Christmas Chaos has entered the chat!

I’ve been seeing Christmas Chaos blankets and sweaters trending everywhere, and I couldn’t resist making my own version! Instead of changing colors or experimenting with different stitches, I decided to let the yarn create the chaos for me!

The new Red Heart All in One Quilt Motif yarn in Holly Jolly seemed like the perfect choice. This yarn was actually designed for making colorful corner-to-corner (C2C) quilt-style squares, but I thought, why not use it for something completely different?! I grabbed my crochet hook, started making simple granny stitch rows, and let the yarn do its thing! And here’s the finished result!

Was this exactly how I envisioned it? Not quite! But that’s the fun of Christmas Chaos! Although the colors appear random, I love how a little pattern starts to emerge. Sections of solid red alternate with more colorful rows of green, mint, and white that almost create a zigzag effect throughout the blanket. It’s the perfect mix of Christmas Chaos with just a little bit of order!

The best part? Only 3 skeins of yarn made this entire blanket!

My finished blanket measures approximately 35 inches wide by 45 inches tall, which is a great throw size for cuddling up on the couch and watching Christmas movies!

About Red Heart All in One Quilt Motif Yarn

Holly Jolly is the newest festive color in the Red Heart All in One Quilt Motif yarn collection!

This clever yarn was designed to create nostalgic quilt-style panels without having to change colors. Each ball is specially dyed to make five 10-inch motifs that can be stitched together into beautiful blankets and other projects.

But here’s the fun part: you don’t HAVE to use it for its intended purpose!

I crocheted straight through each skein using the granny stripe stitch. No planning out colors and no extra ends to weave in! The result is a completely random Christmas stripe pattern!

This is a very beginner-friendly blanket using a simple granny stripe stitch! The most important part is understanding where to place your stitches at the beginning and end of each row.

I actually shared this same granny stitch technique back in 2020 when I made my Granny Stripe Crochet Blanket with Red Heart Retro Stripe yarn. I also have a video tutorial. It’s using the other yarn but its the same pattern on my Repeat Crafter Me YouTube channel:

For this Christmas version, I used the same basic pattern with a different yarn.

Starting Chain

Chain 102.

This gave me a finished blanket width of approximately 35 inches.

If you would like to make a wider blanket, you can adjust your starting chain, keeping the granny stripe stitch repeat in mind.

Row 1

Make 3 DC in the 6th chain from your hook. Skip 2 chains, make 3 DC in the next chain. Continue this pattern across your starting chain, making only 1 DC in the last chain. Chain 3 and turn.

Row 2

Make 3 DC in the first space from the previous row. Continue making groups of 3 DC in each space across. At the end of the row, make 3 DC in the last space (the leftover chain-5 space from your foundation chain). Chain 3 and turn.

Row 3

Make 3 DC in the first chain space and continue making groups of 3 DC in each space across the row. At the end, make 1 DC in the top of the chain-3 from the previous row. Chain 3 and turn.

Row 4

Make 3 DC in the first space, then continue making 3 DC in each space across. At the end of the row, make 1 DC on top of the chain-3 from the previous row. Chain 3 and turn.

Continue Crocheting!

Now that you’ve got the hang of the granny stitch, continue repeating the same stitch pattern! No need to change colors or follow a specific color sequence. Just keep crocheting and watch the Christmas Chaos unfold! I continued until I had used all 3 skeins of Holly Jolly yarn, which gave me 85 rows total!

How Long Does It Take to Crochet?

Here’s something fun! I actually timed myself crocheting one row of this blanket. It took me approximately 3 minutes and 30 seconds to complete a row. Multiply that by 85 rows, and the entire blanket took approximately 5 hours of actual crocheting time! Of course, I didn’t crochet it all in one sitting. I worked on it here and there throughout the week. This would make a fun weekend project or a handmade holiday gift!

To Border or Not to Border?

I haven’t added a border to my blanket yet, and I’m still deciding if it needs one! I wanted to share the finished blanket exactly as it looks after using 3 full skeins of yarn so you can see how much blanket you get. I may go back and add a simple border, but for now I’m enjoying the random stripes and colorful granny stitches just as they are!

A Little Christmas Chaos!

I love finding unexpected ways to use yarn, especially the Red Heart All in One collection! Sometimes it’s fun to ignore what a yarn was designed to make and just experiment with something different. This Holly Jolly yarn created such a fun mix of Christmas colors, and I love that the granny stitch gives the blanket a little texture while still letting all those colors shine. Now I have the perfect little Christmas throw for movie nights, holiday decorating, or gifting!

What do you think? Should I add a border, or leave my Christmas Chaos blanket just the way it is?
