Coffee, tea, or hot cocoa?! Whatever your favorite drink, you’re going to love this oversized Crochet Mug with Heart Appliqué!
We’re continuing our Winter Activities Crochet-Along with a sweet mug of something warm! While this design fits perfectly into our winter theme, I love that it’s actually an all-seasons project. Just think of all the color combinations and possibilities!
Green tea? Pumpkin spice latte? Peppermint hot chocolate with marshmallows on top?! The possibilities are endless!
And can we talk about the size?! This mug is slightly oversized, measuring approximately 7 inches wide by 5.5 inches tall, and I LOVE it! It makes such a fun statement piece, whether you’re adding it to your Winter Activities blanket or using it as a standalone appliqué.
Imagine this mug on a crochet tote bag, pillow, wall hanging, or even a cute kitchen-themed project!
The mug is crocheted in rows, with a contrasting strip of yarn at the top to represent your favorite beverage. Add a sweet heart to the front and a few little marshmallows, and you’ve got yourself an adorable crochet cup!
I’ve also created a full video tutorial on my YouTube channel to walk you through the entire project!

Continue working SC stitches evenly around the outside edges of the mug. Join with a slip stitch to first stitch in the top of the mug and chain 1, turn.
Mug Handle
Make 3 slip stitches down the side of the mug.
Chain 14, skip approximately 6 stitches along the side of the mug, and join with a slip stitch into each of the next 2 stitches.
Turn your work.
Working back along the chain: SC in first chain, HDC in next 12 chains, SC in last chain. SC into the next stitch along the edge of the mug to secure the handle. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Position the heart in the center of the mug and stitch into place using your tapestry needle.
Crochet Marshmallows
With white yarn: Chain 4., DC in 3rd chain from hook and DC in last chain + Chain 2 and join back down to the last chain. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.
Repeat to create as many marshmallows as you’d like!
Arrange the marshmallows along the top of the mug and stitch into place.

Make It Your Own!
This is where the fun really begins! By changing the colors of your yarn, you can create an entire collection of adorable mugs.
A few ideas:
- Pumpkin Spice Latte: Orange mug with a rust-colored heart
- Green Tea or Matcha: Green mug with a light green heart
- Peppermint Hot Chocolate: Pink or red mug with white marshmallows
- Classic Coffee: Cream or brown mug with a coordinating heart
- Winter Cocoa: Blue mug with a darker blue heart
You could even make a different mug for every season!
And remember, while this design is part of our Winter Activities CAL, there’s no reason to limit it to a blanket square. I think these oversized mugs would look especially cute on a tote bag!
