This Ice Fishing Square is one of my favorite blocks in the blanket because it adds a little bit of dimension. The fishing rod extends across the square, the fishing line loops naturally from the reel to the tip of the rod, and finally disappears down into the ice hole. It’s such a fun little scene!
One of the best parts? This design isn’t just for winter.
Simply swap colors for a grassy green background with a blue pond, and you’ve instantly created a classic summer fishing scene! The fishing pole itself works beautifully year-round, making this square incredibly versatile for future blanket projects.
As always, I encourage you to make it your own! Change the colors, add a tiny fish jumping from the water, or even embroider little ripples around the pond.

Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in colors Delft Blue (ice pond), Beige and Topaz browns (rod), Black (fishing line), and Turqua (reel)

Ice Hole/Pond:
with blue yarn
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first 5, SC in next 5, 2 SC in next 5, SC in last 5 stitches, join, chain 1
Round 4: SC in each stitch around, join, fasten off leaving long tail (30 SC)
For a summer version, use the exact same pattern to create a pond instead of an ice hole. Just change the background colors and you’ve got a completely different scene!
Fishing Pole Handle and Rod:
With darker brown yarn
Chain 4, SC in second chain from hook and rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn (3 SC)
Row 2-9: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (3 SC)
At the end of row 9, do not turn, Working around the outside edge of the handle, SC evenly down the side, across the bottom, and back up the opposite side until you reach the top edge.
Join light brown yarn.
Chain 24, SC in 4th chain from hook, SC in next 3, HDC in next 10, DC in remaining stitches, skip a stitch along the top edge of fishing pole handle and join rod with a slip stitch.
Fasten off leaving long enough tails to stitch handle down to square.
Fishing Reel Circle:
with turquoise blue yarn
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 8 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, fasten off leaving long tail (16 SC)
Reel Handle:
with black yarn, starting in the middle of the magic ring, surface slip stitch from the middle of circle to the edge, chain 2 and make 3 SC in second chain from hook, fasten off and weave in ends.
Now let’s add the fishing line:
Join in black yarn to the edge of the circle reel
chain 10, join with slip stitch 5 stitches up on the pole rod,
chain 8, join 6 stitches farther up on pole rod,
chain 8 and join 6 stitches farther up on pole rod,
chain 6, and join to top of pole rod,
Finally, chain 25 (or more if you’d like a longer line) and let the fishing line hang to the middle of pond. Thread the tail through the center of the pond and secure it to the back of the square, leaving the line hanging naturally.
Assembly Tips
- Sew the pond onto the blanket square first.
- Position the fishing rod diagonally across the block before stitching it down.
- Attach only the handle and rod. The black fishing line should remain loose between the reel and rod to create realistic loops.
- Feel free to adjust the chain lengths if you’d like a tighter or looser fishing line.

The rod across the square, line looping from the Turqua reel into the Delft Blue hole — that’s why this CAL block has dimension, and why a green/blue swap turns it into summer fishing.
