Hockey Stick and Puck Crochet Appliqué

Calling all hockey fans! This Hockey Sticks and Puck Appliqué is the next design in the Winter Activities CAL, and it couldn’t be more fitting for our family.

My middle son plays hockey for his high school JV team and in the house league at our rink, so we spend a lot of time at the ice arena. Practices, games, and everything in between (about four nights a week!). Hockey is truly close to our hearts, so designing this one felt extra fun and meaningful.

And guess what? This pattern turned out to be much easier than I expected. Sometimes even I surprise myself when designing! You’ll have this worked up in no time. In fact, the full video tutorial is only 15 minutes long.

Winter Activities Crochet-Along

Materials

  • Red Heart Super Saver in Café Latte and White (hockey sticks)
  • Red Heart Super Saver in Charcoal and Black (puck)
  • Size H Crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Hockey Sticks (make 2):
starting with brown
Chain 7, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, 2 SC in last, chain 1, turn
Row 2-3: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (7 SC)
join in white yarn, chain 1, turn
Row 4: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (7 SC)
Row 5: SC Decrease, SC in remaining stitches, chain 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 6-9: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (6 SC)
join in brown yarn, chain 1, turn
Row 10: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 11: SC in first 4, SC Decrease in last, chain 1 turn
Row 12: SC Decrease, SC in remaining 3, chain 1, turn
Row 13: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (4 SC)
Row 14: SC Decrease, SC in remaining 2 stitches
do not fasten off, now lets make the stick handle
chain 20, HDC in 4th chain from hook, SC in remaining 16 stitches, join to top edge face of stick, chain 1, turn, SC back up stick making a HDC in HDC and HDC in the chain 3, chain 1, turn
HDC in first two HDC stitches, SC back down stick handle and join to top edge of face of stick, Fasten off

Hockey Puck:
with dark gray (charcoal) yarn
Magic Ring, chain 2 and make 2 DC + 2 HDC, + 3 SC + 2 HDC + 2 DC + 2 HDC + 3 SC + 2 HDC, join to first DC, join, chain 1
Round 2: SC in each stitch around, join in black yarn, chain 1 (18 SC)
Round 3: SC in first two stitches, HDC in next, 2 DC in next 5, HDC in next, 2 SC in next, slip stitch in remaining stitches, join to first SC, fasten off.

Make two hockey sticks and arrange them so they slightly overlap and cross, then place the puck centered below. If you prefer a simpler look, you can also use one stick and one puck.

Stitch the appliqué pieces securely onto your square using a tapestry needle and matching yarn. Don’t worry if the back of your square starts to look messy — you’ll see your sewing stitches and yarn ends from attaching the appliqués.

That’s completely normal! The final Winter Activities blanket will be finished with a soft fleece backing, which will cover the back of the squares and hide all of the stitching.

This appliqué pairs perfectly with the rest of the Winter Activities designs and adds that fun, sporty touch to your blanket. If you’re a fellow hockey parent or fan, this one’s for you.
