I’m a little late getting this month’s square finished, but Square #8 of our Winter Activities Crochet-Along is finally here! We’re heading back to the ice for another favorite winter sport: curling!
This Crochet Curling Stone Appliqué is a simple design, but I love how recognizable it is with the two shades of gray and bright red handle. It’s a fun addition to our collection of winter activities and looks great stitched onto the 10-inch crochet square we’ve been using throughout the CAL.
And of course, you don’t have to make the entire blanket to use this pattern! The curling stone can be used on its own as an appliqué for other winter and sports-themed crochet projects.

Square 1: Ice Skates
Square 2: Hockey Sticks and Puck
Square 3: Skis and Ski Poles
Square 4: Snowboard & Goggles
Square 5: Snowflake

Square 7: Ice Fishing
Each design celebrates a favorite winter pastime, making this blanket a fun project for skaters, skiers, hockey players, snowboarders, and winter enthusiasts alike.

Crochet Curling Stone
Begin with Heather Gray.
Chain 15. Work 2 SC in second chain from hook, SC in next 12 chains, 2 SC in last chain. Chain 1, turn. (16 SC)
Row 2: SC in each stitch across. Chain 1, turn. (16 SC)
Row 3: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 14 stitches, 2 SC in last stitch. Chain 1, turn. (18 SC)
Row 4: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 16 stitches, 2 SC in last stitch. Join Light Gray, chain 1, turn. (20 SC)
Rows 5–9: SC in each stitch across. Chain 1, turn. (20 SC)
Row 10: SC decrease over first 2 stitches, SC in next 16 stitches, SC decrease over last 2 stitches. Join Heather Gray, chain 1, turn. (18 SC)
Row 11: SC in each stitch across. Chain 1, turn. (18 SC)
Row 12: SC decrease over first 2 stitches, SC in next 14 stitches, SC decrease over last 2 stitches. Chain 1, turn. (16 SC)
Row 13: SC in each stitch across. Chain 1, turn. (16 SC)
Row 14: SC decrease over first 2 stitches, SC in next 12 stitches, SC decrease over last 2 stitches. Chain 1, turn. (14 SC)
Row 15: SC in each stitch across. (14 SC)
Do not turn. Continue working SC stitches around the outside edge of the curling stone to smooth and round the shape. Switch between Light Gray and Heather Gray as needed so the edging coordinates with the colors of the stone.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Curling Stone Handle
With Cherry Red, chain 15, HDC in 3rd chain from hook, HDC in next chain, DC in next 8 chains, HDC in last 3 chains. Chain 1, turn.
Row 2: SC in first 3 stitches. Leave remaining stitches unworked. Chain 1, turn.
Row 3: SC in 3 stitches. Chain 1, turn.
Row 4: SC in 3 stitches. Do not turn.
Chain 8. Work 2 HDC in second chain from hook, HDC in remaining chains. Work 3 SC along the last 3 stitches of Row 4, then continue working SC stitches a short way down the left side to smooth and round the edge.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Assembly
Position the curling stone in the bottom center of your crochet square and stitch it securely in place.
Next, layer the red handle along the top of the curling stone. Using the long yarn tail and a tapestry needle, stitch the handle in place. As you sew, slightly curve the handle to give it the classic curling stone shape shown in the photos.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.

This curling stone appliqué is such a creative addition to the winter crochet-along! I love how the gray shades and red handle make the design instantly recognizable. The step-by-step instructions also make it look very approachable.
Thanks for sharing this! I’ve been following the CAL since the snowflake square, and I really appreciate how clearly the shaping rows are written — the curling stone could easily turn out lopsided, but the increases and decreases are easy to follow step by step. I might skip the full blanket and just use this one as an appliqué on a beanie instead.
The two shades of gray really do all the heavy lifting here—it’s amazing how instantly readable it is as a curling stone once that bright red handle goes on. I love that it fits right into the 10-inch square collection, too; it’ll be a fun one to spot among the other winter sports.

The red handle against the two grays is exactly what makes this read as curling instantly—such a smart use of color to sell the shape. Also love that it keeps the 10-inch square series going for winter.

I liked the little detail about slightly curving the handle while sewing it onto the stone. Those small assembly choices can make a big difference in the finished piece. It’s not just about following the pattern, but getting the shape to feel right.

Winter Activities CAL square #8 — two grays plus the bright red handle is why the stone reads as curling and not just a puck on the 10-inch square. One blanket shot just hides the handle. I take one photo and cut it into a numbered grid so the stone stays its own tile. That’s why we built ImageSplit: one photo, numbered cells in the browser, nothing uploaded.
The two shades of gray and bright red handle make this curling stone instantly recognizable. I love the idea of stitching it onto the 10-inch square alongside the other winter activities!

I absolutely love the crochet curling stone applique! It reminds me of cozy game nights when my friends and I would gather to watch curling competitions while sipping hot chocolate.
