5 Little Ducks Finger Puppets

May 7, 2012

Someone (big brother) knocked over his toy closet book shelf last week and when we were in the midst of cleaning up the rubble, we discovered a book we hadn’t read (or hadn’t read in a long time): Five Little Ducks. This book is a sing-along to the traditional Five Little Ducks song. It is a great counting book with a catchy tune. It instantly became a new favorite of both boys. Then an idea popped in my head! I would crochet little duck finger puppets to help with our hand movements as we sang the song. I came up with an ultra easy pattern and then ended up hot-gluing the button eyes and felt beak on (although theses could be sewn on as well).

Duck Finger Puppet Pattern:

Materials:
Yellow medium worsted weight yarn
Size G6 (4.00 MM) crochet hook
Tapestry needle
Orange felt for beak
Black button eyes
Hot glue gun

Magic ring, chain 1, SC 6, do not join
Working in continuous rounds, 2 SC in each stitch (12)
Rows 3-8: SC in each around (12) – if you don’t want to use a marker to keep track of each row, SC 96.
Join and slip stitch around the bottom , join to first slip stitch and fasten off, weave in ends.
(Note: you can continue rounds to make finger puppet longer for longer fingers)

Optional: Create a small frayed pom for hair

Beak shape should be cut out of felt to look like this

Put two drops of hot glue on the middle inside corners of the beak and pinch shut. I also added a 1ply strand of orange yarn to act as the ducks nostrils. Hot glue beak and eyes onto puppet.

We had a great time with these puppets. After I told the story using the puppets on my hand, the boys wanted to put them on their own fingers. They also worked as standing props and a great way to count and work on subtraction. One duck is subtracted each time a duck in the book goes missing.

You don’t need to buy this book to tell this story. Here are the easy-to-memorize lyrics:

Five Little Ducks
Five little ducks went out one day
Over the hills and far away
Mama duck said, “Quack, quack, quack, quack,”
but only four little ducks came waddling back…

Four little ducks went out one day
Over the hills and far away
Mama duck said, “Quack, quack, quack, quack,”
but only three little ducks came waddling back…

Three little ducks went out one day
Over the hills and far away
Mama duck said, “Quack, quack, quack, quack,”
but only two little ducks came waddling back…

Two little ducks went out one day
Over the hills and far away
Mama duck said, “Quack, quack, quack, quack,”
but only one little duck came waddling back…

One little duck went out one day
Over the hills and far away
Mama duck said, “Quack, quack, quack, quack,”
but no little ducks came waddling back…

No little ducks went out one day
Over the hills and far away
Mama duck said, “Quack, quack, quack, quack,”
and all five ducks came waddling back.

Happy Quacking!

These are so cute! I made a felt board with 5 little ducks for my daughter, but I think the finger puppets are better. 🙂
