I made the boys their own bug catcher nets today out of bubble wands and cheesecloth. This is a very quick project and made for a nice outdoor activity.
I happen to have these smaller size bubble wands, but you could also use the larger size ones. I cut the cheese cloth in a large circle and glued the edges around the wand with my glue gun.
The trick to using the glue gun for this project is to first fold the cheesecloth over the edge of the bubble wand and then squirt the glue on top. Let it dry to the point where the glue becomes tacky and you can use your fingers to press it down.
When the bug catchers were ready to use, I put plastic critters in our sand/water table and filled it with water and bubbles. The boys had fun searching for “bugs” with their nets. Big brother went on to catch other things, like rocks, flowers and dirt :o)
When you are done using these as bug catchers, the cheesecloth can be cut off and you have your bubble wand back!

great idea!
These are great! My daughter's butterfly net ripped and she just about died over it! I bought her a new one at the dollar store. I would never have thought to use cheesecloth! Thanks for sharing!
what a great use for all those left over cheesecloths once the kids aren't babies spitting up on them. Thanks for sharing this on Kids Co-op
