Half Birthday Celebration

September 27, 2012

Some may think it’s silly, but I love celebrating half birthdays! Mainly because there is no pressure. You don’t have to throw a big party and worry about who to invite and who will show up, come up with a theme, make favor bags, decorate, etc. On your half birthday you can just do something low key and stress-free! And especially when you have little ones, every 6 months is a milestone. They change so quickly and this is a great way to celebrate their growth and change. It’s also a great excuse to have cake 🙂

My boys turned 1 1/2 and 3 1/2 this week (their birthdays are 3 days apart!). So I we had a little evening celebration that started off with a half birthday dinner.

They each had a half of a half pound hamburger! Yum!

After dinner came the cake. You must have a half birthday cake on your half birthday! A half birthday cake is literally a half of a cake! This year I decorated their cake with a banner I made using scrapbook paper. Everything was cut using my Cricut, strung with baker’s twine and attached to skewers. The actual cake didn’t turn out exactly as I had imagined but thats ok, it still tasted good.

We lit 1 1/2 and 3 1/2 candles and sang “Half-ty” Birthday instead of Happy Birthday. We also told the boys that when someone asks how old they are they can now tell them “One and a Half” and “Three and a Half.”

Next the boys opened their half birthday presents. Little Brother got a HALF dozen play eggs by Small World Express
and Big Brother got Melissa & Doug Deluxe Wooden Cutting Fruit Crate so he can practice cutting each fruit in HALF! They also got a half-birthday book: Poppo’s Half-Birthday Wish!

Do you celebrate half birthdays? If so, what are your half birthday traditions?!

When my 36 year old son was 12 we celebrated his half Birthday. He was born in January and his sister's had summer birthdays. And every year on his birthday it seemed to snow or we had an ice storm and no one could get to his party. Needless to say he was dissappointed almost every year. So we solved this problem by having half birthday celebrations! Love your blog!!

    Sarah,
I dont know why I was thinking more about this post last night but I just had to come back again and tell you how much I love how you made your cake banner. I think it was the color combo that was calling me back to look at it.
    Just love it.
    You're so talented!
    Be well,
    Jen

I love this! One of my good friends is exactly 6 months older than me so her half birthday falls on my birthday and vice versa. I've been looking for a cute half cake to make her and this is perfect! So cute and inspiring! Thank you from Australia – Kimmi

Hey! i like your idea to celebrate half birthday. I didn't think like this before. Sometimes kids have objections like that i want only a particular at my birthday event or any relative i want to seen on that day. So , all type of matchings etc and etc problems can be solved by celebrating half birthday. We can manage our preparations according to kid's wishes. My little child has birthday on 1 jan and he always complaint that every one got busy in new year preparations every year on his birthday event. So, this idea is quite beneficial for me to make my sweetheart happy and i can choose batter party supplies Australia as party supplier because this supply store has pending orders on new year.

A minute he bewildered, a minute I dreamed
Do not rush to make the rain fill my heart
To forget the heart, to the constant pain
Droplets of sad drops dropped on the soft, wet lashes.
We sobbed to look at each other, making an appointment for the next day

I love celebrating half birthdays too! It’s such a low-pressure way to mark milestones, especially with little ones who grow so fast. A tip for anyone in the USA wanting to capture these moments: tools like https://www.mattbushmanfoundation.com/ make it easy to turn small celebrations into short, shareable videos. You can highlight the fun and growth without spending hours editing, making these memories even more special.
