Groundhog Crochet Applique Pattern

January 14, 2013

Groundhogs Day is a couple weeks away (February 2nd) and its always fun to try and guess if the groundhog will see its shadow or not. Am I crazy for hoping for 6 more weeks of winter? I would love to see some snow this year. We haven’t had any here in Oregon and I would love for my boys to have a snow day. Anyway, in celebration of Groundhogs Day, I made up a little groundhog appliqué. I call him Punxsutawney Phil! Although I think he might make a better beaver or gopher. Either way, I am sure you can all find a use for him 🙂

Groundhog Applique
Finished Size: 3″w x 3.5″h

Materials:
– Worsted weight yarn in brown black and white
– Size H crochet hook
– Tapestry needle
Abbreviations:
Magic Ring
SC = Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet

Magic ring, 8 HDC in ring
Round 2: 2 Hdc in each around, join, chain  2
Round 3: 2 DC in next 6 stitches (12 DC), chain 2, turn
Round 4: DC in each stitch (12 DC), ch 1, turn
Round 5: SC, HDC in next 2, DC in next 6, HDC in next 2, SC, fasten off weave in ends.

Ears:
Count three stitches up from each side of the head. This is where you will join to make the ears. See picture for an idea of where the ears should be.

Join yarn, chain 2, make 3 HDC in same stitch, fasten off weave in ends.
Nose:
Magic Ring, 8 HDC in ring, fasten off leaving long tail to sew on.
Tooth:
Chain 4, SC in second chain from hook and in last 2 stitches, ch 1, turn,
SC across, ch 1 turn,
SC across, fasten off leaving tail to sew on.
Eyes:
Using tapestry needle and white yarn, weave yarn vertically between two stitches until it starts to take the shape of a small oval (it doesn’t need to be perfect).
Then use black yarn to weave horizontally on the bottom of the oval.
Mouth:
Using your tapestry needle ad black yarn, sew the mouth on in the shape of smile. Be sure to also create a line down from the nose and over the tooth.
(See my puppy hat tutorial for a video on how to sew on the mouth)
Sew appliqué onto a basic hat or make it into a magnet, pin, headband, keychain, or more!

    Hey Sarah… this is so cute! I have been looking through all your stuff and absolutely love it. I was wondering, do you have a "Horse Applique"? I have been looking for a pattern with no avail… Waiting to hear from you.

    I see you are using the term “magic ring”. I have never heard of that saying so I would like to know if you are referring to a plastic ring or the center of a granny square?

    Thank you,
    Roxanne

    I want to thank you for the many hours and the variety of patterns for many holidays and occasions that you post .I use them to fill the down times in being a full time caretaker. I make a lot of appliqué pins for different holidays.I donated quite a few depending of season and holiday.I donate to the Tamarac librarians that save and suggest lg print books for my elderly mom.They receive about25. And CVS pharmacy near where we live in Florida ,they get about 15 .The bank tellers that help us The therapists both physical and occupational too that help us . I use scraps and different yarns on hand. I’m happy to say the most expensive thing is the packages of medium to small safety pins. I give out a pin with each appliqué.Ifeel I’m giving my time my yarn,I’m not going to pay for patterns to.I copy your patterns on 5×8 cards and use them as references .thank you.Ruth
