Countdown Calendar

April 22, 2013

Summer vacation is on the horizon! Big brothers last day of school is June 14th and even though we had to cancel our big vacations this year (I am going to be too pregnant to travel), we are still looking forward to having a fun summer stay-cation. When I saw an empty beer box in our garage with 28 little compartments, I knew exactly what I wanted to transform it into… a countdown calendar! Next month we will begin counting down the days until summer vacation by punching out each square and finding a small treat/toy inside each compartment. You could use this calendar to countdown to a vacation (like Disneyland) and fill each square with something Disney related, or maybe you are counting down until a special holiday or occasion and you can fill it with items related to that holiday/occasion. I tried to fill ours with things we could use over summer (like a mini flashlight for camping and a blow up beach ball for the beach/pool) or little fun items we can play with on those rainy spring days leading up till summer (like stickers, mini play-doh jars, and hot wheels cars). And today is Earth Day! So this a great recycling project as well!

I used a empty beer bottle box that had 28 compartments

I cut down the sides of the box so they were the same height as the compartments
I then filled each compartment with a small toy or treat.
Using approx. 3.5 x 3.5 squares of tissue paper, I covered each compartment.
After all the squares were covered, I used some thicker tape to line the grid.
At this point I also taped my numbers on each square. You can create your own numbers any word processing program and cut/punch them out or you can use the template I created. You can download it HERE and HERE. I used a 2″ circle punch to punch-out each number.
To make everything look nice and neat, I wrapped the rest of the box with some brown kraft paper. You can find kraft paper in large rolls at your Dollar Store.
Now we are ready to punch out each square as we count down the days till summer!

This is a very interesting calendar, but I prefer the most common calendars, as they are more convenient and practical. I usually take calendars for printing on this site: https://printablecalendar.net/ I like the design and they are completely free. Therefore, if you also like a more discreet style, I light to go to this site and print a calendar from this site
