Here is Day 16 of my 26 Days of Crochet Animal Alphabet Appliques!
P is for Penguin
This plump little penguin is one of my favorite appliqués of the bunch! It would be the perfect embellishment on any crochet winter projects or strung as bunting for some fun winter decor. Remember that I also have a penguin crochet hat pattern!
Materials:
– Worsted weight yarn. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in white and black, and terracotta orange.
– Size G Crochet Hook (the bigger the hook the bigger the appliqué and vice versa)
– Tapestry needle
SC = Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
Penguin Applique Pattern:
Magic Ring, chain 2 and make 10 DC in ring, join, chain 2
Round 2: 2 DC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Row 3: SC in first, 2 HDC in next, 2 DC, 2 DC, 2 HDC, SC
Change to black
Round 4: 2 HDC in first 15 stitches, 2 SC in last 10
Now you are going to make the first wing…
Round 5: SC, Hdc, DC, chain 3, SC in 2nd ch from hook, HDC in last chain, join to same place as where you made the DC. Fasten off.
Attach yarn on other side across from the bottom of the first wing.
Chain 3, SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC in last chain, continue by making a DC in the same stitch as your chain 3, HDC in next, SC in next, join with slip stitch to next. Fasten off weave in ends.
Round 5: SC, Hdc, DC, chain 3, SC in 2nd ch from hook, HDC in last chain, join to same place as where you made the DC. Fasten off.
Attach yarn on other side across from the bottom of the first wing.
Chain 3, SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC in last chain, continue by making a DC in the same stitch as your chain 3, HDC in next, SC in next, join with slip stitch to next. Fasten off weave in ends.
Feet: make 2
Magic Ring, chain 2, make 3 DC in ring, chain 2, join to ring, pull tight, fasten off.
Magic Ring, chain 2, make 3 DC in ring, chain 2, join to ring, pull tight, fasten off.
Sew feet do bottom of appliqué. Stitch on an eye and beak as well.
