S is for Snail: Crochet Snail Applique

October 20, 2014

Here is Day 19 of my 26 Days of Crochet Animal Alphabet Appliques!
S is for Snail
This colorful snail can be made in so many different color combinations! You could also leave off the body and it would make a nice seashell. Keep this in mind for your summer/beachy crochet projects 🙂

Materials:
– Worsted weight yarn. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in dusty purple, purple, and goldfish.

– Size G Crochet Hook (the bigger the hook the bigger the appliqué and vice versa)
– Tapestry needle

Abbreviations:
Magic Ring Tutorial
Sl St = Slip Stitch
SC =  Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet

Snail Applique Pattern:

Starting with main shell color
Magic ring, chain 2 and make 10 DC in ring continue to SC in rounds
Round 2: 2 DC in each stitch around
Round 3: 2 DC in first 10 stitches
Fasten off
Starting in middle, surface crochet in a spiral along DC edges with a different yarn color to add the swirl.
Now lets work on the head and body:
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 8 HDC in ring, join
Attach to shell and sc in next 8 (doesn’t need to be exact). Chain 4, SC down chain and join to second from last stitch. This makes the tail end of the body.

    I just love your creations!!! I've made a lot of your cute designs for family and friends, getting lots of compliments.

    I signed up for your daily e-mails and enjoyed them as long as I got them.
    They stopped coming about a week ago and I was wondering why.

    I’m a bit confused. I’m doing the main shell color. Do I join with a slip stitch, or with a single crochet? Second question, so round 1 after joining are single crochets? Thanks!

    I have the same question as Angelina, between making the 10 DC in the ring and making 2 DC in each of those for round 2, what does “continue to SC in rounds” mean?
