Z is for Zebra: Crochet Zebra Applique

October 27, 2014

Here is Day 26 of my 26 Days of Crochet Animal Alphabet Appliques!

Z is for Zebra

WOW! I can’t believe this is the last day of my animal appliqués! I hope you have enjoyed this series and stay tuned for the reveal of my Animal Alphabet Afghan in the next couple weeks! This Zebra is actually the same pattern as my Giraffe appliqué so that makes it easy 🙂 You could probably use this pattern for a variety of other animals as well!

Materials:
– Worsted weight yarn. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Chocolate and White and Black.
– Size G Crochet Hook (the bigger the hook the bigger the appliqué and vice versa)
– Tapestry needle
Abbreviations:
Sl St = Slip Stitch
SC =  Single Crochet
SC Decrease = Single Crochet Decrease
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet

Zebra Applique Pattern:
Starting with black…
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 5 SC in ring, pull tight but don’t join, chain 1 turn
Row 2: 2 SC in each stitch, chain 1, turn (10 SC)
Row 3: SC in each stitch, chain 1, turn (10 SC)
Continue to SC across flat side of half circle. You should have 6 single crochets along this edge.
Switch to white yarn, chain 1, turn
Row 4-8: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 9: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 10: SC in each stitch across (4 SC), chain 3, turn
Row 11: HDC in second chain (of the chain 3), slip stitch in last chain, join in same stitch with a slip stitch (you have now made one of the ears), slip stitch across row, in last stitch chain 3, HDC in 2nd chain from hook, slip stitch in last chain, join in same stitch with slip stitch. Fasten off leaving long tail.

Tie on black yarn in the middle of the ears to create a mane.

With your tapestry needle, stitch on black stripes. Add black eyes as well and two little white nostrils. Weave in loose ends.

    This is absolutely the cutest afghan I have seen with all the little pieces. What a great project to work on if travelling and then can be appliqued when arriving either at your destination or back home. Thank you so much for all the time you have taken to put this together. Someone is going to enjoy getting this afghan and it will grow with the baby as he/she grows.

    Thank you so much for the alphabet appliques! I am 76 years old and wanted to make an applique blanket for my little 5 year old granddaughter for Christmas. Your appliques are perfect! Bless you! Sharon
