Something cool just happened. I was crocheting another tiny mouse from the pattern I posted yesterday and at the same moment my son was showing me a worksheet of christmas lights he colored at school. A light bulb went off…literally! The crochet “mouse” I had in my hand also made the perfect shape for Christmas lights!! I love when one pattern can become something else 🙂 Of course you will need to add a little top to the bulb but that is easy. Complete pattern is below!
Materials:
– Worsted Weight Uarn. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Scarlett, Mustard, Fern, Purple, and Black. The turquoise is Loops & Threads Impeccable in Aqua.
– Size G Crochet Hook.
– Tapestry Needle
– Poly-fil fiber stuffing
Abbreviations:
SC = Single Crochet
SC Decrease = Single Crochet Decrease
DC = Double Crochet
Crochet Christmas Light Pattern:
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 4 SC, pull tight and continue to SC in rounds
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around (8 SC)
Round 3: SC in each stitch around (8 SC)
Round 4: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around (12 SC)
Round 5: SC in each stitch around (12 SC)
Round 6: 2 SC in first, SC in next 2, repeat around (16 SC)
Round 7: SC in each stitch around (16 SC)
Round 8: 2 SC in first, SC in next 3, repeat around (20 SC)
Round 9-11: SC in each stitch around (20 SC)
Round 12: SC Decrease, SC in next 3, repeat around
Eyes should be between round 5 and 6 and leave 3 stitches between the eyes.
Round 13: SC Decrease, SC in next 2, repeat around
Round 14: SC Decrease, SC in next, repeat around
Now is a good time to start stuffing with poly-fil and continue stuffing until completely closed.
change to black (or green or gray) yarn
Round 15-17: SC in each stitch around (8 SC)
Fasten off leaving long tail and similar to what you did to close the bottom of the mouse (SEE TUTORIAL HERE), you will use your tapestry needle to close the top of the bulb. Weaving your needle under the back loops of the stitches (two at a time) sew it shut.
Create a little loop at the top before fastening off and weaving in ends. This makes it easy to string up!
Create a long chain to string lights on. A chain of 150 was enough for 5 bulbs so double or triple accordingly.

These instructions are a bit off with the count in round 4 and on the decrease. The numbers don’t add up the way it’s written. Also no round total stiches listed for decrease. I adjusted myself to match what final round count is listed. But kinda guessed for the decrease.

As I crochet the chain I crochet the bulb loop on — I fasten the bulb on about every 7 to 10 chains.
I love these so much! They are absolutely adorable. I was thinking, perhaps it would make more sense to crochet the chain right into the base of each bulb so that they can actually be hung up without them sliding around on the chain. Thanks for the tutorial! 🙂 Lisa

Very cute! I made some similar and attached them to the chain so they wouldn’t slide around. Then I made a string of three with catnip in them so it would look like my cat stole some off the tree 😉

Would you please review the pattern and clarify after round 12, it says eyes should be 3 stitches apart? Perhaps from a different pattern. When I completed The Red Colored bulb, it looked like A STRAWBERRY, so I crocheted a stem with two leaves LOL looks cute. Do you have a pattern for a smaller bulb? Thank you! I made some and they turned out very cute
I made these but didn’t close them up and put 4 dove candies inside for my crochet group as a small Christmas token. Strung them across the room on a crocheted chain and had small clothes pins to attach them to the chain so they could choose the color they wanted. I love this pattern.
I think your idea will be copied and utilized to inspire the creation of many more ideas because it is brilliant and original.
