Crochet Lovebot Robot Hat

January 5, 2015

Apparently a new year brings lots of new ideas because I have been a multi-tasking machine this past weekend! I have lots of new projects to show you, the first being this Lovebot Robot Hat! You can make it a regular robot just by making the heart button eyes circles or make him as I did and gift it for Valentine’s Day! Color options for this hat are endless. And I am excited to show you how to make a square hat instead of the normal circle you are used to. Dare I say it’s actually easier?!

Materials:
– Worsted Weight Yarn. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Dusty Blue, Scarlet Red, and Silver Blue, and a little bit of White.
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Two Heart Buttons (or round black buttons)
– Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations:
Magic Ring Tutorial
SC = Single Crochet
SC Decrease = Single Crochet Decrease
DC = Double Crochet

Square Hat Pattern:

Size: 0-3 Months
Chain 24, DC in 3rd chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain,
continue to DC along other side of chain, join, chain 2 (44 DC)
Round 2-10: DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (44 DC)
fasten off and begin on earflap as written below (if desired)
Size: 3-6 Months

fasten off and begin on earflap as written below (if desired)

fasten off and begin on earflap as written below (if desired)

Size: Child

Chain 34, DC in 3rd chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain,
continue to DC along other side of chain, join, chain 2 (64 DC)

Round 2-15: DC in each around, join, chain 2 (64 DC)

fasten off and begin on earflap as written below (if desired)

Size: Teen/Adult

Earflaps should be centered over side seams/folds. Start with the place where you fastened off. Count 5 stitches over to the right and attach yarn. Do the same on the other side, using the place where the hat folds as your center marker.

With accent color (I used dusty blue), attach yarn and SC around the entire bottom edge of the hat (including earflaps). Fasten off and weave in ends. Cut 6 long strands of the same color or varying colors, pull yarn halfway through last loop of the earflaps (you now have 12 strands). Knot, braid and knot again at the end of your braid. Trim ends of braided tails so yarn is even. Do this for both earflaps.

    Cute little hat for a cute little girl. May grandkids have grown out of this stage though so I need to come up with something more or my sons need to produce more grandchildren…lol

    I like it, it is slightly weird being square. My little grandson will only wear his monster hat with no earflaps (he hates anything dangling by his face) and nothing else, I am making the child size now as the pre school size doesn't cover his ears properly and he is not yet 3 years old!

    It says to crochet down the other side of the chain (foundation chain?) Is there a chain added in there? I'm confused by the instructions in row 1

      No, you just continue down the other side. You’ll see openings, just crochet into them. Its confusing at first, but you’ll get it. Good luck!

    I really love this pattern and am following the Toddler size.
    I’m confused though as I’m about to start row 7 but have already lost 2 stitches (no idea where!)
    Should I be counting the chain 2 as a stitch and then should I be starting my dc stitch into the same stitch as the chain?
    Thanks in advance for any guidance. I’m pretty new to crochet 🙂

    I love this pattern. I made one for my 36 year old nephew who has a nonprofit organization that teaches robotics to kids and he wears his all of the time. One of his friends asked for one in pink so I made one for her as well. I will post pics on facebook as I asked to join your closed group. I will definitely be making more of these, as my 7 year old nephew now wants one too.
