Nose Bridge:
Turn hat upside down. You are going to want to locate the 6 stitches in the middle of the hat. Doesn’t need to be perfect because ANY spot could be the middle since we haven’t attached any other features yet.
Attach orange yarn along the last row of orange stitches. chain and make 6 SC in the next 6 spots, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 3: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (4 SC)
Continue repeating row 3 until nose bridge is long enough to reach the base of hat.
Fasten off leaving long tail.
Sew all side of the nose bridge to the hat.

Nose:
With black yarn…
Magic Ring, chain 2 and make 2 DC, HDC, 2 SC, HDC, 2 DC, HDC, 2 SC, HDC, and join to first DC. Pull tight and leave long tail to sew onto base of the nose bridge.

Cheek Fluff:
Right Side: Attach yarn over the DC on the edge of the last row of hat.
Chain 6, SC in second chain from hook, HDC decrease over next two, DC decrease over next last two, join with a SC to next DC on edge of hat, chain 5, HDC decrease over first two, DC decrease over last two, join with a SC to next DC row on hat, chain 3, HDC decrease and join to next DC on edge of hat. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Left Side: Starting on the 4th DC row of white from bottom of the hat, attach yarn and chain 3, SC in second chain from hook, HDC in last, join to next DC space on edge, chain 4, SC in second chain from hook, HDC in next, DC in last, join to next DC space on edge, chain 5, SC in second chain from hook, DC in next two, 2 DC in last, join and fasten off, weave in ends.

Feel free to add more fluff “spikes” if you want it to fill more of the white area on large hats. The pattern above works perfectly for a 0-3 month size hat.

NOTE: After making the cheek fluff, I realized that maybe it should be pointing downwards? If you feel this way, just reverse the right and left side patterns!

Small Ears (0-12 month size hats) Make 2:
Starting with orange yarn…
Chain 9, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn (8 SC)
Row 2: SC decrease, SC in next 4, SC decrease over last two, chain 1, turn
Row 3: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 4: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC decrease over last two, chain 1, turn
Row 5: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (4 SC)
Row 6: SC decrease two times, continue to SC around edge of ear…When you get back to the top, attach black yarn, SC + Chain 1 + SC along top to make black tip of ear!

Small Inner Ear (Make 2):
White white yarn…
Chain 7, SC in second chain from hook and rest of the way down chain, ch 1, turn
Row 2: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 3: SC across (4 SC)
Row 4: SC decrease over next two, chain 1, turn
Row 5: SC decrease, and continue to SC around edges of ear.
Fasten off leaving long tail to sew inner ear onto outer ear.

Large Ears (Make 2):
Starting with orange yarn…
Chain 11, SC in second chain from hook and rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC decrease, SC in next 6, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 3: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (8 SC)
Row 4: SC decrease, SC in next 4, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 5: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 6: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 7: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (4 SC)
Change to black yarn…
Row 8: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (4 SC)
Row 9: SC decrease two times, chain 1, turn
Row 10: SC decrease and continue to SC around edges of ear making sure to change yarn color at the appropriate spots.

Large Inner Ear (Make 2):
White white yarn…
Chain 9, SC in second chain from hook and rest of the way down chain, ch 1, turn
Row 2: SC decrease, SC in next 4, SC decrease, chain 1, turn

Row 3: SC across (6 SC)
Row 4: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 5: SC across ( 4 SC)
Row 6: Make 2 SC decreases, chain 1, turn
Row 7: SC decrease, and continue to SC around edges of ear.

Fasten off leaving long tail to sew inner ear onto outer ear.
Lastly, attach the button eyes and you have yourself a friendly fox hat! Feel free to add earflaps or maybe a cute little bow on one of the ears for a girl? Can’t wait to see what you do with the pattern!

Love this! My little brother and his wife are expecting their first, a boy, this fall. Some of the decorations for the baby's room has foxes so I will definately make them this hat! Maybe you could create a diaper cover with a tail to go with it? It would be easy to convert it to a racoon tail too, just like you did the hat!

This might be a stupid question but after each round, do you turn your work since it doesn’t say otherwise?

You don’t turn your work on the hat part, only on the nose and ears as specified.

Made this hat for my newest nephew (he’s 6 months old) and his sister adopted it and wears it around the house. My family members loved the hat design. Super cute. Thanks for all the great hat patterns (I’ve made a few of yours by now).

Will post a few photos of the fox hat soon: http://www.prairiethings.weebly.com

    Thanks, again, Sarah!

Hi! First of all, thank you for all the patterns. I love making your hats! I just have a comment about the last row of the child size. I noticed that the pattern says to switch color to black before making the SC, however this doesn’t reflect the picture and this note doesn’t appear in any of the other sizes… I just realized it as I was making the nose bridge and went to check the picture one more time.

Sarah, how do i reverse the cheek fluff to be pointed down? Do I flip sides and reverse the pattern? I’ve been trying but the left side of the hat still turns out to be pointed up.

Hello I have been having trouble with the Cheek FLUFF also. it really does make the look. I made a baby one from another gals site and am now making yours for the Momma Fox. We’re there any corrections for the fluff part? I have been crocheting for over 30 years and I am not giving up!

Hi, I love this pattern and I’m making it for my son but I’m struggling to find a good way to join the yarn on and start the nose bridge. My first attempt you could still see some of the white showing through because of where I was working the stitches. Any tips?

Right above your white double crochets, you will notice you have a terracotta thread (one strand of yarn between your terracotta double crochets), attach your yarn there-not the row where your white and terracotta intertwine. Worked great for me

When it says “attach the yarn” does it literally just mean tie it on? I’ve never tied yarn on, I always just attach the pieces when done. Also, how do you start a loop after you have tied it on?

I like to attach this way:
            wind yarn around hook twice,
stick hook in piece where you want the attachment,
hook the working end of the yarn and pull out a loop,
yarn over hook and pull through loop (like a SC),
pull that yarn through one of the winds on the hook (like the end of a SC)(it’s a little fiddley),
follow your pattern (keep track of the extra wind for a stitch or two it was just there to make the other loop stay put).

Sorry I didn’t see your post sooner! Hope you finished the hat.

After making the fox hat twice, as well as the other owl toque pattern several times, I have found that the sizing is way too big for toddlers and adults. My gauge and yarn are fine and I’m using the right size hook. I’ve ultimately just altered the pattern for toddlers and adults to fit more snuggly. Being made from a stretchy material, it’s not an item that I want fitting big from the get go.

I totally agree. I just made the child size with the right gauge and hook size and it is HUGE, even on my adult head. I’ve made dozens of hats in the past but I’m going to have to frog this one. It’s an adorable pattern, the sizing is just way off in the bigger sizes ☹️

Sarah: I have finished the fox pattern and am having a problem with the ears flopping down. Have I not sewn the attaching stitches tight enough? I looked at other patterns. The bunny hat pattern states using a pipe cleaner but I think this is for the length of the ears and to add a bend in one of them.
    Please help.

RW: I am also having problems with this. Did you ever find a solution to the ear flopping problem?

      Thanks!

Is the child’s hat last row single crochet supposed to be black?

Love this hat….well all of them actually, but I am having trouble with the check fluff like Kaitlin above. Is there another way to explain it? Following the instructions but it does not look like the photo at all.

    Thanks!

Do the instructions for the child size say to change to black yarn before the last single crochet row? Or am I reading it incorrectly?
    Thank you for clarification.

Under the “child” instructions it says to -“Change color to black
Round 16: SC in each around, join, fasten off, weave in ends (64 SC)”
But in the photos there is no black ring around the bottom, nor is that line in any of the other sizes, that I could see. I’m guessing that was a mistake? I was just blindly following the pattern and didn’t realize it until I was putting the nose on the already sewn nose bridge.

Also, the sizes seem a bit big. Even the child size was too large for my adult head, so I stopped the increase rounds & started the rounds of sc sooner.

I just realized several others mentioned the same issue with the change to black line on the child size. Hopefully she will correct the pattern!

For the child size it says to change to black for the last round of the hat but not on any other size. Is this a typo?

When I attach the ears I always form a slight “C” shape so they stand a little firmer. I have other techniques depending on the ears, but it’s too hard to explain, so that is the best advice I can give Chelsey.

I love this website, I made this hat to go with a diaper cover and fox tail for a baby shower. I showed it to my friend and she bought it in a heartbeat for her nephew-to-be! Thanks for all your wonderful patterns!

The problem I’m having is understanding the black part of the tip of the ear.
Attach black yarn , sc + chain 1 + sc along top to make black tip of ear . Mine comes out straight , no tip . Can you help me .
Also there is no pattern for the child’s ear , do I use large ear pattern ?
    Thank you …great pattern .

Thank you for sharing this beautiful hat pattern! I did make some changes, but stayed true to the aesthetic. I was having trouble with the ears bc my black scrap yarn was a lighter weight….so I just made the outer ears fully orange and sewed on black tips that I crocheted separately. For the whiskers I did flip them so it goes widest at the top and narrowest at the bottom of the cheeks. I also made them separately and then sewed them on. I love it! Thank you so much!

Everything works fine until I get to the cheek fluff. The right side turns up and the left side turns down and I can’t see any way to solve the problem except do the right side back to front.
