My last blog post showed a quick little crochet snowflake pattern and now I will show you how to alter that snowflake slightly and transform it into a granny square! Make an afghan entirely of snowflakes or use them as filler squares for a winter themed blanket. They would also go together perfectly with my Crochet Snowman Square!
Materials:
– Worsted Weight Yarn in white and blue. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Aqua.
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle
Abbreviations:
Magic Ring Tutorial
SC = Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
Finished square is approx 8 x 8 inches.
Snowflake Square Pattern:
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 8 SC in ring, join
Round 2: chain 3 + DC in the first stitch, *DC + chain 1 + DC in next, repeat from * around, join to second chain in chain 3.
Round 3: slip stitch over to chain space, chain 2 + HDC in space, chain 3, *HDC + chain 1+ HDC in next chain space, chain 3, repeat from * around, join to top of chain 2.
Round 4: slip stitch into to chain 1 space, *chain 4 and slip stitch to join back into same space you started, chain 6, slip stitch into next HDC chain space, repeat from * around, join
Round 5: slip stitch into chain 4 space, *chain 2+ DC + chain 1 + DC + chain 2 and slip stitch to join back to chain 4 space, chain 2, slip stitch to join to middle of chain 6 space, chain 2 and join with slip stitch to next chain 4 space, repeat from * around. Join, fasten off and weave in ends.
Continue with blue yarn.
Round 6: Starting in the chain 2 space right before the snowflake “point” you just joined to (see picture below), chain 2 + DC in the chain 2 space, *SC +chain 1 + SC in the top of the DC stitches in snowflake point, 2 DC in chain 2 space, chain 1, 2 DC in next chain 2 space, repeat around from *, join to top of chain 2, chain 1
Round 7: SC in first 3 stitches, HDC in chain 1 space, DC in next 3 stitch, *chain 3 and skip over chain 1 space from previous row, DC in the next 3 stitches, HDC in chain 1 space, SC in next 3 stitches, SC over chain 1 space, SC in next 3 stitches, HDC over chain 1 space, DC in next 3, repeat from * until end… you should end with a SC over the chain 1 space because you are ending in the middle of the top edge of your snowflake, join, chain 1
Round 8: SC in each stitch around making 2 SC + chain 1 + 2 SC over each of the corner chains, join, fasten off and weave in ends.
Block if needed. HERE is a tutorial on how to block your square. My photos show an unblocked square.

How many of these squares would make a good sized blanket? I’d like to make one for my mom for next Christmas and want to make sure it’s big enough.

Well I absolutely have to make my little girl a “Frozen” blanket now. Beautiful design. Thanks! 🙂
On the snowflake granny square please explain on round 7 what you mean by sc OVER ch 1 sp. is that skip ch 1 sp? Same w HDC OVER ch 1 sp. I have asked this question 3 times and not gotten an answer. The holes on mine don’t end up in the right place. Can anyone help me?
It is unfortunate that no one replied – it might be too late and you have already figured it out… but I believe she means SC in the Chain 1 place… or HDC in the Chain 1 space.
I just finished my first motif and that is what worked for me.
Others who want answers above – I am going to make a blanket with my squares… I think we can all figure out our own sizes by making them until we think the blanket is the big enough. 🙂
Thank you for this info. Really confusing because before I get to that chain space to sc into, I’m supposed to put a dc in three stitches and there’s only 2. I know I didn’t goof up in the previous round.
I LOVE the snowflake! This might make a really cute winter poncho from squares. Thank You for the pattern and your creativity.
My goof I missed the stitch but went back and caught it.
Love this pattern and your colors are beautiful. I’ve found my next project !
Could someone add how many stitches I should have at the end of each round?
I agree with folks that are a bit confused with your instructions, I have the pictures, but they don’t do the exact job. I would like to see a video done, the concept for the snowflake pattern is great. Also, I’d like the number of stitches at the end of each row.
i love the snowflake granny square, Do you have a video on this. i am having trouble understanding how to make it square after making the snowflake, thank you
do you have a tutorial for the snowflake? I think I think I have it figured out but would like to see it worked up on a video. Love it by the way!

Good or bad is a question that is best left to professional philosophers. One has to reckon with the fact that the very concept of adult relationships has changed. And it has changed, not least https://datingjet.com/ because of the speed of life, the pandemic, and the ability to compensate for the lack of live communication on the Internet online.
