Crochet Halloween Bat Wreath

One Halloween wreath wasn’t enough for me this year… I had to make a second! A cute little Vampire Bat spreads its wings across this crochet wreath which also incorporates some fun craft elements! If you missed my Halloween Cat Wreath, you will want to check it out and follow the same basic tutorial. The Bat pattern is included in this post.

Materials:
– 12 inch foam wreath form (found at Michaels Craft Store)
– Wooden “Happy Halloween” lettering and wooden spooky house (found at Michaels Craft Store in the seasonal Halloween section)
– Bernat Super Value Yarn in  Lush green (one skein).
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Purple Felt
– Hot Glue Gun

For the Bat:
– 2 black pipe cleaners
– Bernat Super Value Yarn in Black and a strand of white yarn for the mouth
– Safety Eyes (found HERE)
– Small amount of poly-fil fiber stuffing (or you can stuff with scrap yarn)
– Size H Crochet Hook

Bat Wings (make 2)
chain 21, SC in second chain from hook and next 8, SC decrease, SC in last 10, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC in first 9, SC decrease, SC in last 8, chain 1, turn
Row 3: SC in firs 7, SC decrease, SC in last 9, chain 1, turn
Row 4: SC in firs 8, SC decrease, SC in last 7, chain 1, turn
Row 5: SC in first 6, SC Decrease, SC in last 8, chain 1, turn
Row 6: SC in first 7, SC decrease, SC in last 6, chain 2, turn
Row 7: DC in first stitch + chain 2 + SC in second chain from hook, DC in next stitch. HDC, SC in next, HDC, DC + chain 2 + SC in second chain from hook, DC in next stitch, HDC, SC in next 3, HDC, DC + chain 2 + SC in second chain from hook, DC in last chain. Fasten off.
Bat Head:
magic ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Round 3: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Round 4: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around
Round 5- 11: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Round 12: SC decrease, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 13: SC in each stitch around
add safety eyes, stitch on mouth and then stuff with poly-fil
Round 14: SC decrease until closed
Bat Body:
magic ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Round 3-8: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Round 9: SC decrease, SC in next, (ending with a SC decrease)
Stuff with poly-fil and sew onto bat head. The opening should match up with round 2 of the bat head.
With tapestry needle and long strand of black yarn, stitch/loop yarn about 6 times around the same spot on the bottom corners of the body to create the feet (this part is optional but gives it a nice detail).
Bat Ears (make 2):
Chain 5, SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC in next, DC in last two, fasten off leaving tail to sew on to head.

One wing will have to be flipped over (back side facing front) and stitched on so they are even on either side. I chose to hot glue a pipe cleaner onto the back of the wings for extra support. If not using the bat for the wreath, this step is not necessary.

I used hot glue to glue the wooden house onto the felt and then the felt onto the back of the wreath. You will need to trim the felt. I also took the easy way out and glued the Bat and Happy Halloween sign onto the front of the wreath. You can stitch the bat on if you prefer 🙂

This wreaths are going to be placed on my double front door this Halloween season but they would also look great displayed on indoor doors!

  1. So cute. I am going to make the bat one for my door. One edit I might make is to crochet the pipe cleaner into the foundation row. Love all of your pieces.

  2. I love these! I’m in the process of making both of them! But for the spooky house I couldn’t find just a single piece. I had to buy one that was a actual house and that lit up. That was the only thing I could find. Is this what you used as well?
