Crochet Slice of Birthday Cake

August 31, 2016

SliceofCake2

Today we are celebrating my little princess Zoe! It’s her 3rd birthday! So many of you have watched her grow and maybe even remember my pregnancy and gender reveal!  She appears quite frequently on the blog, modeling many of my crochet projects, and always with a smile! Definitely my little crocheter in training. A birthday calls for a slice of cake. And this crocheted version is not only calorie-free but will last forever! Zoe has already put it in her play kitchen and is “feeding” it to her dolls 🙂

SliceofCake1

Materials:
– Worsted weight yarn in white, yellow, brown, pink, and purple for the candle.
– Size H crochet hook
– Polyfil fiber stuffing
– Tapestry needle
– Small round rainbow colored beads

Slice of Cake Crochet Pattern:

Triangle Frosting Top:
with white yarn
Chain 13, sc in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (12 SC)
Row 3: SC decrease, SC in next 8, SC decrease over last two, chain 1, turn
Row 4: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (10 SC)
Row 5: SC decrease, SC in next 6, SC decrease over last two, chain 1, turn
Row 6: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (8 SC)
Row 7: SC decrease, SC in next 4, SC decrease over last two, chain 1, turn
Row 8: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 9: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC decrease over last two, chain 1, turn
Row 10: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (4 SC)
Row 11: SC decrease two times, chain 1, turn
Row 12: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (2 SC)
Row 13: SC decrease, chain 1 and continue to SC around all edges of the triangle.
Fasten off.

Round 1: Re-attach yarn in BACK loop only of right hand corner of triangle. Chain 1 and SC in back loops down the back edge of triangle (approx 12-13 SC…exact stitch count doesn’t matter).
Change to yellow yarn and SC in back loops only around the rest of the triangle (approx 26 stitches, again exact stitch count doesn’t matter), join, chain 1
Round 2-3: Switch back to white for back edge only, SC in both loops along back edge, join yellow and SC in both loops around rest of triangle. Join, chain 1.
Round 4: join white yarn and SC along back edge only in white, instead of switching to yellow, join brown yarn and SC in back loops only of remaining 2 edges. Join, chain 1
Round 5: with white for back edge only, SC in both loops along back edge, join yellow and SC in back loops of your brown stripe. Join, chain 1.
Round 6-7: same as 2-3.
Fasten off and don’t worry about weaving in ends 🙂 knot them so they won’t unravel and then us them as stuffing.
Create a second “Triangle Frosting Top” but this time with yellow and it will go on the bottom.
Stuff lightly with polyfil and sew yellow triangle to bottom. It helps to sew in the back loops of your last row to give it a flat edge.
Puff pink frosted edge:
In front loops of the back edge of cake (you already worked in the back loops so these should be easy to see). Join pink yarn and make a bobble stitch in first stitch, chain 1 and join with slip stitch to next stitch. Bobble + chain 1 in next, slip stitch to next, repeating down edge.
Do the same for the bottom back edge!
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Candle:
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, continue to SC in each stitch in rounds until length desired. Stuff lightly before sewing shut.
Candle Flame: chain 4, SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC in next, 4 DC in last, now working on other side of chain, HDC, and SC in last. Join and fasten off, leaving tail to sew into candle stick.
I sprinkled small colorful beads on top for the photo but you can easily glue them down with a little hot glue or Gem-tac (like I did in THIS cookie tutorial)

I’ve started a tradition of taking a picture of Zoe with a crocheted number. Love comparing last year to this year!
I used the Moogly Crochet Numbers pattern, crocheting two numbers with bulky yarn and then SC the edges together.

If you happened to catch my “naked” cake mistake version I posted on Facebook (SEE it HERE), you can still make it by using the pattern above.. just disregard the part about switching to white for the back of the cake. Just make rounds of yellow with a stripe of brown… actually much easier and hardly any ends! But I do like the frosted version better 🙂

Happy birthday Zoe! It’s so cute! I love making things for my little ones to imagine with too!

May I ask what hook you are using in the pic with the pink puff stitch detail? It looks pointy and inline, exactly the hook I’m looking for.

    Thanks for the pattern too

Hi! I know I’m late to the party (no pun intended), but I love your work and this pattern is amazing <3 I want to make 6 slices that look identical when put together to form a cake, but are different on the inside (one is rainbow, one is vanilla with chocolate filling etc.) and on my friends birthdays I'll have them pick one from the full cake and they get to keep it. I would really love a video tutorial for this though, because I've made a couple and they look kinda wonky, and I'm not sure what I did wrong.

I want to say something, learn this here now Japanese translation services good website https://pickwriters.com/japanese-translation-services.The employees in this company do not shy away in front of the “alien” nature of the Japanese language as an English speaker might see it.
