Crochet Crayons

August 22, 2017

I am still over here obsessing over Bernat Blanket Yarn! After I made the Plush Pencils, it got me thinking about CRAYONS! And with just a few tweaks to the pencil pattern, a whole set of Crayola Crochet Crayons were created! I even made a Crayola Box out of a yellow display board. The crayons work up super quickly and I used the leftover Bernat Blanket Brights yarn I had sitting around from my Unicorn Snuggle Sack. We will be donating this set of crochet crayons to Zoe’s preschool!

Materials:
–  Bernat Blanket Brights Yarn: Pixie Pink, Pow Purple, Busy Blue, Go-Go Green, School Bus Yellow, Carrot Orange, and Race Car Red. Shop all colors HERE at Yarnspirations.com. You will also need black!
– Size K crochet hook
– Large tapestry needle
– Poly-fil Fiber Stuffing
– Hot Glue Gun
– Foam Alphabet Stickers (found at Michaels Craft Store)

For the Crayon Box:
– 1 Yellow Display Board
– Hot Glue Gun
– Scissors
– Green Constructions paper

Crochet Crayon Pattern:
Starting with main crayon color
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join to first SC, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 3: In back loops only, SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
work in both loops for rest of project
Round 4: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Change to black yarn
Round 5-6: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
You will want to start weaving in your loose ends on the inside
Change back to blue yarn
Round 7-22: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Start stuffing with poly-fil fiber stuffing
Change to black yarn
Round 23-24: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Change back to blue yarn
Round 25-26: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 27: SC Decrease, SC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1 (16 SC)
Round 28: SC Decrease, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (12 SC)
Don’t forget to keep stuffing as you go! And weave in ends as you go!
Round 29-30: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (12 SC)
Stuff the last bit with poly-fil. Take your tapestry needle and sew the top closed.
Weave in ends.

Black Oval:
Chain 11, SC in second chain from hook, SC in next, HDC in next 2, DC in next 2, HDC in next 2, SC in next, 4 SC in last,
now working on other side of chain
SC in next 2, HDC in next 2, DC in next 2, HDC in next 2, SC in next, 4 SC in last, join to first SC, chain 1
Round 2: SC in next 10, 2 SC in next 3, SC in next 10, 2 SC in last three stitches, join, fasten off leaving long tail.

Sew oval onto side of crayon
I used Foam Sticker Alphabet Letters for the wording. I used hot glue to ensure that they stay attached. The adhesive on the foam stickers will not be enough.
Using a tri-fold display board, you can easily use the pre-scored edges to your advantage! Cut and score remaining edges on the back side of the board.

Fold and hot glue ends together

Do you think these could be made with RHSS? Maybe using double strands?

Hi Sarah; Trying to make the purple crayon and wondering if you have any suggestions on how to see the stiches better using this thick dark yarn. Especially when the pattern says to stick in back row. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Gail
