Extreme Crochet Hat

December 27, 2017

Chilly weather calls for chunky hats! And boy oh boy, do I have a big cozy hat for you! This crochet hat is only 4 rows long! That is because it’s made with the giant, super bulky, big stitch merino wool from Mama Knows Luxury! This is the same yarn that is used for extreme hand/arm knitting which is the most traditional way to use this yarn. You can see an entire series on this HERE with beautiful photos and video tutorials.

Sarah from Mama Knows Luxury has the biggest and best selection of huge merino wool! I actually got a chance to meet Sarah when I was visiting Toronto for the Our Maker Life Knit and Crochet Meetup (you and read all about that HERE) and flipped through her big book of yarn samples – what a treat that was! Here is Sarah showing me an extreme knit sample!

You can find this yarn RIGHT HERE in the Mama Knows Luxury Etsy Shop. And before I go on, be sure to use THIS LINK and enter the coupon code REPEATCRAFTERME at checkout for 20% off! No end date to that deal!!
Now if you buy this giant yarn, you will also need a giant crochet hook! This 40mm crochet extreme hook is also available HERE in the Mama Knows Luxury Etsy Shop!

Ok so let’s get to this easy-peasy pattern!
First you will want to split your yarn into two. This will give you double the amount! And it will be a bit thinner and easier to crochet with. Follow THIS TUTORIAL from All About Ami on how to split your yarn (really it just pulls apart but you will want to see her beautifully written and photographed blog post on how exactly to do this)
Materials:
– Big Stitch Merino Wool from Mama Knows Luxury. I am using colors Periwinkle and Peacock, and Neutral.
– 40mm Crochet Hook

Extreme Crochet Hat Pattern:
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 5 SC in ring, do not join, continue to crochet in rounds.
With purple
Skip over chain 1 when starting round 2.
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around (10 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 4, 2 SC in next, SC in last 4 (12 SC)
Round 4: SC in each stitch around (12 SC),
Round 5: join in white yarn. in back loops only, Slip Stitch in each stitch around, fasten off and weave in ends.

You can weave in the ends with your fingers!
Make a pom pom!
Loosely wrap yarn strand around hand about 4 times. Slip off hand and tie in the middle with a tight knot. Cut loops and trim!
Go big or go home, right?! Zoe wanted a hat too! And despite the way it looks, it’s not heavy! The stitches are big and loose! For her hat, I used the same pattern as above but stopped increasing after the second round so it only has 10 SC stitch around instead of 12.

See THIS POST for complete care and information about big stitch yarn.

    Hi Sarah,
I would like to purchase the patter for the Polar Pal blanket that was published in the Simply Crochet, Issue 50 magazine. Can you please tell me how to do this or purchase the entire issue? Thank you. (Love your crafts!)

This winter, I wanted a cozy knit sweater with a bright pattern, but the regular plus-size stores didn’t have anything interesting. A friend recommended Ashro—they have a lot of Afro-style knitwear. Before ordering, I checked out https://ashro.pissedconsumer.com/review.html . People praised the quality of the yarn. I bought a cardigan and a hat—they’re soft, warm, and not itchy. They fit well. Now I wear them with pleasure. And you can check out the selection.
