Ever since I posted my Moss Stitch Shawl, I’ve been flooded with requests for a tutorial on how to use the moss stitch to make a square instead of a triangle. Ask and you shall receive! Using Caron Big Cakes yarn in color Jordan Almonds, I figured out that you can easily make a moss stitch square blanket by crocheting in continuous rounds. I tried several times to do this using a join after each round but didn’t like the way you could see the seam. This is such a great relaxing project that you can do while binge watching your favorite shows or to take on-the-go while in waiting rooms or during kids extracurriculars.
Since Caron Big Cakes is a self-striping yarn it is perfect for this project! Below you will see a picture of Zoe holding up the blanket after using one ball of yarn. It is about 25×25 inches. I decided to use about a half a ball more to make the blanket 32×32 and then had yarn left over for the tassels!
Materials:
– 1 or 2 balls of Caron Big Cakes yarn in color Jordan Almonds. Purchase at Michaels.com
– Size H Crochet Hook
-Tapestry Needle
– Clover Tassel Maker Large. Purchase HERE.
The Moss Stitch = SC + Chain 1
You crochet in all of the chain 1 spaces from the previous row.
Moss Stitch in a Square Pattern:
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make a SC + chain 2 + SC + chain 2 + SC + chain 2 + SC + chain 2 + SC
Pull tight but do not join
Round 2: Now working in the first chain 2 space, SC + chain 2 + SC, chain 1, in the next chain 2 space, SC + chain 2 + SC, chain 1, repeat in the last two chain 2 spaces, do not join
Round 3: Working in first chain 2 space (these are your corners), SC + chain 2 + SC, chain 1, SC + chain 1 in the chain 1 space, SC + chain 2 + SC in the next chain 2 corner space, chain 1, SC + chain 1 in the chain 1 space, repeat around, do not join,
Round 4: SC + chain 2 + SC in the first corner, chain 1, SC + chain 1 in each of the chain 1 spaces until you reach next corner, SC + chain 2 + SC in next corner, chain 1, repeat around, do not join.
Continue pattern working in continuous rounds until it’s as large as you’d like!
When you are ready to fasten off, you will want to end in a corner. Slip stitch to join your yarn in any corner. Fasten off and weave in ends!

I like this pattern very much as I love all your patterns. But I want to make a bedspread/throw for a double bed and need to know how to do this as a rectangle rather than a square. Make a slip knot. Ch. 6.
Rnd 1: Beginning in the 2nd st from hook and using only front loop: sc, ch-2, sc, ch-1. Skip one ch, sc in next, ch 1. Skip next ch *sc, ch-2, sc, ch-1* twice in last ch. Turn to continue down the other side of your starting chain (using the back loop). Skip one ch, sc in next, ch 1. Skip next ch. Sc, ch-2, sc, ch-1 in beginning ch. Do not join.
Now you have a small rectangle. From here you will crochet just like the original pattern with a (sc, ch1 at each ch space and a (sc, ch-2,sc, ch-1) in each ch-2 (corner) space.

This is a lovely pattern and I appreciate all the work that went into it. However, because it does not use the standard formatting for patterns (it lacks parentheses and the asterisks that mark repeated sections and set one group of stitches apart from another) it is very hard to follow. I basically gave up. I would love to see this pattern corrected so that it uses the standardized format. It would be so much easier to follow

And replying to “J” Sarah ACTUALLY says after trying for too many hours, she didn’t like it at all with finishing a round and starting another. People, in my Opinion, with only watching the Video, this would have to be the easiest blanket pattern EVER, way easier than a normal Granny, in my opinion, how easier can you get. I love it Sarah. Hi Cindy, if you haven’t found the hook, she gives details at around 2 minutes, 50ish seconds in. But she spoke so quickly I could not get what she was saying. You might do better. I’m getting old. 🙂

I had the same problem. Here’s the pattern written out properly for anyone that needs it.
• Round 1:
o Magic Ring, chain 1 and make a
o *SC, CH 2, SC* four times (these are the four corners)
o Pull tight but do not join.
• Round 2:

o In the next 3 chain 2 spaces, *SC, CH 2, SC, CH 1*, do not join
• Round 3:

o SC, CH 2, SC, CH 1 in the next chain 2 corner space
o SC, CH 1 in the chain 1 space

Found your shawl because I too fell in love with a colorway of big cakes and had to go back to Michael’s the next day so I could buy a version for a baby blanket. Your video also really helped make sense of the instructions!
I am a new crocheter. I am making this blanket. The more rows I crochet the more skewed the corners look. How do I block this? Thanks!
You shouldn’t need to block it, I started it this evening. So long as you have the same number of ch1 spaces on each side of the same round. I used a paperclip to mark which corner was the beginning so that as I go around when it feels wonky u can just count the number of ch1 spaces in a round and determine if I added or skipped one by mistake (this is especially helpful for the first few rounds). Even though there’s no join, you do still have rounds.
This happened to me as well- I ripped out, tried again, still have dr Seuss style corners
same here. it’s wonky and kind of “buckling” won’t lay flat. am so tired of counting.. lol… every side, every round I go.. I count. I’ve already unraveled 3 times .. down to almost the beginning where it lays flat.. still having the problem. I had to put it down and work on something else.
Counting is essential to every crochet pattern….
Just want to make sure…you skip the chain 1 after the corners right..? You do not sc in those c1…thanks for the pattern

I have tried this pattern with DK yarn #3 and 4mm hook but I keep getting a real baggy middle, what size hook would be better? Do I go smaller so work is tighter or bigger? :/
me too! i just unraveled it after almost finishing one big cake.. .didn’t like how it was buckling in the center and curling up on the edges. i was being mindful of tension too. have to start all over. .. sigh

Love this pattern. In your instructions, after row 4 you say to continue pattern as much as needed. Is that repeating just row 4 continously or repeating rows 2 through 4?

I saw this pattern today, went out and bought the Caron Big Cake in the same color (making this for a baby boy gift), and began crocheting the blanket. All was going well until the white yarn came in. Three times already I have had to cut out a section of the white yarn and rejoin it because the dye from the blues have dropped into the white which makes the white stripe look as if it has a dirty spot in it. I love the pattern because it is easy and quick, but I will not use this yarn again. Instead, I will choose several colors from another yarn company and join the colors myself. Thanks for a great pattern, though.

Is there a trick to getting it to lay flat? Mine is folding up into a pyramid essentially. I’ve kept all my stitches pretty much the same tension throughout so I’m at a loss as to what it could be. Should I block this?

I love your blanket I love that it just goes round and round and you can use stripe yarns let him change as they will, my question is when you start a new skein of yarn do you make sure that you’re starting with the same color no matter where it is in this skein? Does that make sense… If you have to do you cut this game to start with the same color as where you left off.

I’m using Bernat Blanket yarn with the recommended size hook for the yarn. After I’ve done several rounds, the center few rows pop up like a tent. They won’t lay flat and when I fold it in half, that area sticks out in the middle. I tend to crochet looser as I go on, so I can’t figure this out. I don’t know if it’s because of the bulkiness of the yarn or something else I’m doing incorrectly. Do you have any suggestions?

I love this pattern but have a question. I have ripped it out twice because the center square comes out crooked. All the rows have the right number of stitches but it still looks like it’s off. I noticed in one of your pictures of the full blanket that the center square is not even too —-is that how it should be? I got almost one ball of yarn completed & ripped it out because it just didn’t look right. All the other squares look fine. I was just wondering if you have found this to be an issue. I really enjoy doing the moss stitch and want this to work out (I also followed the video exactly).
