Crochet Kids Poncho with Caron X Pantone Yarn

August 17, 2018

Have you seen this new yarn?! Caron X Pantone yarn was revealed last night is now available in Michaels Craft Stores and on Yarnspirations.com! I absolutely adore the color combos! Inspired by Pantone color chips, each “skein” is made up of individual hanks of yarn that are braided together.

I fell in love with this particular color called “Strawberry Chill” and immediately envisioned making a crochet poncho for Zoe!  Although you could make this as big or small as you’d like to fit anyone 🙂 It’s a super simple pattern with repeating increases using the moss stitch (SC + chain 1).

Materials:
– Caron X Pantone Yarn in Strawberry Chill (or any other combo!) You will need about 4-5 skeins. Shop the yarn HERE at Yarnspirations.com.
– Size H Crochet hook
– Tapestry Needle

Finished Size: 18 inches long x 22 inches wide. Zoe is 4 years old and this fits her.

Kids Crochet Poncho Pattern:
Note: Make starting chain longer (even number) for bigger neck hole.
Loosely chain 72, without twisting the chain, join to first SC, chain 1
SC + chain 1 in first stitch, skip a stitch, SC + chain 1 in next, skip a stitch, repeat all the way around, ending with a SC, chain 1
Round 2: SC + chain 1 in first chain space, SC + chain 1 in next chain space, repeat until you have made 17 SC + chain 1 stitches. In the 18th chain space you will SC + chain 2 + SC all in one stitch, Continue to SC + chain 1 for the next 17 stitches until you get to the last stitch and make a SC + chain 2 + SC (this makes your front and back p0ints).
Continue to SC + chain 1 in rounds without joining (the joining stitch looks messy so I decided to eliminate it!)
Round 3: SC + chain 1 in each chain space, make a SC + chain 2 + SC in each of the chain 2 spaces from previous round.
Continue Round 3 for as long as you’d like!

I made a total of 45 rounds.
Here are is the color sequence:
1 cream color
2 blue
3 light pink
4 maroon
3-4 dark green (I actually only had 3 on hand)

Finish with tassels in any color of your choosing! I spaced them about 5 stitches apart.

$7.99 a skein? Too much for such a small amount.

I’m certain you can do this with any leftover yarn you may have.

    Hi Sarah,

I’ve started this project and I’m a little stuck! ON this part: “…in the 18th chain space you will SC + chain 2 + SC all in one stitch…” After that SC, do we Chain 1? So it would be: SC + chain 2 + SC + chain 1 all in one stitch. Then we continue with the SC + chain 1…etc.

I love the pattern and the COLORS!!!!! The yarn is yummy and I can’t wait to really get this project started!

    Thank you!
    Becky

    Hi Sarah,
Firstly I want to say I think I’ve make all of your hats and love the instr’s usually so easy to understand..I am trying to make this poncho and am having trouble with understanding step 2.
the sc in ch sp, the part where it says cont to sc plus c1 for next 17 until you get to last st (if I then do the sc, ch2, sc I would end up with 4 points and if I didn’t do it and went to end points would not be even….I know its prob a simple answer to this and I am hoping you can make it clear to me…Thanks So Much
    Sue

I don’t see where the increase is. Shouldn’t it flair out at some point but following the pattern as is, each row is even with the previous one. Other then that very easy pattern to follow. Thanks.
