Crochet Pumpkin Sweater Vest

October 7, 2018

It’s pumpkin season! We are feeling festive for Fall around here! I was inspired by all the pumpkins on our front porch and decided to get a little creative with my yarn. I made Zoe a little Pumpkin Crochet Sweater Vest! It has little cap sleeves and fits nicely over a long sleeve shirt.

Materials:
– Bernat Super Value in Pumpkin Orange and Lush Green. Shop colors HERE on Yarnspirations.com.
– Size H Crochet Hook
– 2-4 Green Buttons (about 3/4 – 1 inch round)
– Tapestry Needle

Sweater Vest is worked from the top down and is worked in rows (not rounds).

This Sweater Vest fits a child 3-5 years old
You can increase after row 5 to make it wider (so row 6 would look like this: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next 9) and you can make it as long as you want by continuing the rows of orange!
I think you could also double the pattern for a much larger size! Although I haven’t tried it myself.

Sweater Vest Pattern:
Staring with green yarn…
Chain 62, DC in 3rd chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 2, turn
Row 2: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next 5, repeat for rest of row, chain 2, turn (70 DC)
Row 3: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next 6, repeat for rest of row, chain 2, turn (80 DC)
Row 4: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next 7, repeat for rest of row, chain 2, turn (90 DC)
Row 5: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next 8, repeat for rest of row, chain 2, turn (100 DC)
Row 6-7: DC in each stitch across, chain 2, turn (100 DC)
Row 8: DC in first 15, chain 5 and skip 20 stitches (this makes your first armhole, DC in next 30 stitches, chain 5 and skip 20 stitches (this makes your second armhole), DC in last 15 stitches, chain 2, turn (60 DC + 10 chains)
Row 9: DC in each stitch across making 5 DC over each chain 5, chain 2, turn (70 DC)
Row 10: in Front loops only, 4 DC all in next stitch, skip a stitch, SC in next, skip a stitch, 4 DC in next, skip a stitch, SC in next, repeat until end of row (this makes your scallops), don’t fasten off. Continue to SC up along sweater edge and collar to make more a finished edge (this part is optional). Then fasten off and weave in ends.
Attach Orange yarn to back loops of Row 10.
2 DC in first stitch, DC in next 6, repeat for rest of row, chain 2, turn
Row 11: DC in first 8 stitches, FPDC in next two, DC in next 6, FPDC in next two, DC in next 6 (basically make a FPDC in all the places where you had made 2 DC in one stitch from the previous row), repeat until end, making DC in last 8 stitches (no front post stitches on the edges of your sweater vest), chain 2, turn
Row 12: DC in first 8 stitches, BPDC in next two, DC in next 6, BPDC in next two (make BPDC stitches in all the places where your FPDC stitches were in the previous row), repeat until end, chain 2, turn
Row 13-28: Repeat rows 11 and 12 until length desired.
SC along the edge of the sweater (the orange part) for a finished edge (optional)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Pumpkin Coil:
with green yarn
Chain 140, 2 SC in second chain from hook and in next 19, slip stitch in next 100, 2 SC in last 20, fasten off and weave in ends.
Weave coil in and out of the DC stitches of row 9

Add 2-4 green buttons to top edge of sweater vest! They will fit in between the DC stitches to button up sweater.

Happy October!

I love this! But my granddaughter wears a 24 months size. Any chance you have the pattern worked out to fit her?

Love this idea! The colors, the stitch, the cuteness of it. I am going to try to make it in an adult size. Hopefully by next Halloween.

This is lovely. A very nice design. Unfortunately, I can’t make it for Halloween as it’s almost no time left. But I promise to sew this sweater next year for my grand-daughter. Jenny, you’ll love this!
