Crochet Hedgehog

January 7, 2019

Cute, cuddly, and quick to crochet! One of my most favorite woodland creatures, the hedgehog can be crocheted is no time at all. This is a simple pattern but can also be customized. You could use the loop stitch (like you see HERE in my Cabbage Patch Doll Hat) to make the back “spikey” or use fur yarn instead. Add a tiny crochet heart to the side of it for a Valentines day gift. So many little ways to tweak this pattern and make it extra special!

Materials:
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Bernat Super Value Yarn in Taupe (dark brown) and Oatmeal (cream color)
Shop all yarn HERE on Yarnspirations.com
– 12mm black safety eyes
– Poly-fil Fiber Stuffing
– Tapestry Needle

Finished Size: Approximately 8 x 5 inches

Hedgehog Pattern:
Starting with dark brown yarn
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 3: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 4: 2 SC in first, SC in next, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 5: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 6: 2 SC in first, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (40 SC)

Round 8-15: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (50 SC)
Round 16: SC Decrease, SC in next 3, repeat around,

Round 17: working back loops only for this round, SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (40 SC)
Round 18: SC Decrease, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 19: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 20: SC Decrease, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 21-24: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Round 25: SC in first 6, SC Decrease 4 times, SC in last 6, join, chain 1
Round 26: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (16 SC)
At this point you are going to want to add your safety eyes at round 23 (about 5 stitches apart from each other) and stuff with polyfil. Continue stuffing until closed.
Round 27: SC in first 6, SC Decrease 2 times, SC in last 6, join, chain 1
Round 28: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (14 SC)
Round 29: SC Decrease until closed
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Nose:
with dark brown yarn
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2-3: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Use tapestry needle to stitch nose closed and sew onto body.

Ears (Make 2):
with cream color yarn
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, do NOT join, fasten off leaving long tail.
You should have a small half circle. Stitch onto head right where the brown and cream yarn meet.

Hi Sarah, I have been following you and your patterns for several years now, and really like so many of your patterns! Recently, I have been looking for a Hedgehog pattern to make into a pincushion. Yours is just perfect! I would like your permission to make him/her about half the size of your stuffed-animal hedgehog. If you agree, I would also like to post my little hedgehog pincushion on my Facebook, and also the crochet groups that I’m a member of. I would link to your pattern, from my personal site I’m developing. If you would rather not, I do understand, and will just keep my little hedgehog and enjoy it here at home! Oh yes, I would also like to give it 4 little feet, so it would stay upright – –

It is really nice, my nephew’s birthday is coming near and I am searching for a gift online for him. I will surely think about this because he will be 1 year old and this is a nice gift. I was reading reviews in BonusCatch because I love to play online games and because of those games, I can buy an expensive gifts for my nephew.

Would this pattern still work if I used a smaller yarn size and hook? Or any other tips on how to tweak it to make it a bit smaller? I was thinking about attaching a little lovey blanket to the bottom, but it seems fairly big for that in its current size.
