Crochet Caron Cakes Crutch Covers

March 12, 2019

This girl has had more injuries than both of her brothers combined! Ugh! My sweet Zoe was jumping on the trampoline at gymnastics class and landed wrong on her right leg. We just left the pediatric orthopedist and it looks like she broke her tibia. This might mean she will be hanging out at home with me for awhile until she can get used these crutches or we figure out another way for her to get around (we are considering a wheelchair or stroller). She currently can’t bear any weight on her right leg.

The first request I got was to crochet crutch covers! I went straight for my Caron Chunky Cakes yarn which is super bulky and soft. Plus it has the perfect colors that add some pizzazz to the metal crutches. In fact, I might just have to yarn bomb the rest of the crutches to make them as pretty as possible for my princess!

Materials:
– Caron Chunky Cakes Yarn. Shop colors HERE
– Size I Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle

Crutch Cover Pattern: Make 2
Chain 21, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, make 4 SC in last chain, now working on other side of chain, SC in each stitch down backside of chain, make 4 SC in last chain, join to first SC, chain 1 (46 SC)
Round 2: SC in first 20, 2 SC in next 3, SC in next 20, 2 SC in last 3, join, chain 1
Round 3-5: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (52 SC)
Round 6: SC in first 20, SC Decrease 3 times, SC in next 20, SC Decrease 3 times, join, chain 1
Round 7: SC in first 18, SC Decrease in next, SC, SC Decrease in next, SC in last 18, join, chain 1
Round 8-12: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (42 SC)
Round 13: *Skip a stitch, 4 DC in next, skip a stitch, slip stitch to join to next stitch, repeat from * around making 9 scallops.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Knee brace for now. We are going to wait and see if the whole leg needs to be casted. Send your positive thoughts and prayers to Zoe for a quick healing. At least she’s in good spirits!

Sarah, I strongly suggest that your next project be covers for the hand holds on the crutches. I was on crutches in high school, and after just a few days, I had to wrap cloth around the hand holds because I was getting blisters on my palms. The cloth was the perfect fix, but super soft yarn would work even better, I’m sure. I simply wasn’t as creative as you are because I would have wanted those crutch covers! Wishing Zoe a super speedy recovery!

Hope for a speedy recovery Zoe! I can feel your pain. When I broke mine I had a walker and had to learn to hop and shimmy. When I could finally put weight on my leg I almost forgot how to walk.

That’s really nice. It’ll be more comfortable for the disabled. The thought put in this matter is really appreciatable.

    Perfect!
I just got my first set of crutches today after having surgery to repair a torn ACL in my left knee. An injury courtesy of a trampoline park… Rather than getting a new set, we had an old pair that a friend gave us so the “pads” are a little less squishy. After a quick search, this was the first pattern I came across. I’m thinking I might make a few sets in different colors so I can match my mood/outfit for the day. Haha. Especially since I’m going to have A LOT of downtime on my hands now.
Thanks! I’m getting started right now!
And Zoe, I hope you heal up quick and get back to fun! ‍♀️

Thank you so much! I “stumbled” on this pattern while I’m on crutches. I didn’t have the chunky yarn so I used Lion Brand Mandala yarn, 2 strands at a time. They fit perfect!
