Every year I always find myself (and my kids/family/friends) needing and requesting a Santa hat for all the November and December festivities. This year I finally wrote down a quick and easy Santa hat pattern! You could make it in a variety of colors or just stick with classic red. The main part of the hat is made with worsted weight yarn. I used Bernat Super Value but Red Heart Super Saver would be a good choice too. The brim is made with Bernat Softee Chunky which is a bulky yarn and makes a perfectly puffy brim. I also used the HDC in the third loop which gives the brim a nice ribbed/knit look! It’s actually a very simple technique and I will walk you through it in the video below.
Materials:
– Bernat Super Value in Berry Red (one skein)
– Bernat Softee Chunky in White (one skein)
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle
– Clover Pom-Pom Maker size Large (optional)
NOTE: ALL HATS START THE SAME WAY. You will begin with the long hat tail. IF you want the tail shorter/longer you can decrease/increase the amount of continuous rows.
NOTE: I’ve found that the “child/teen” size (the one with the 60 stitch count) fits the majority of people! I can wear it. All of my kids can wear it (ages 6, 8, and 10), and I’ve gifted it two adults (male and female) and it fit them perfectly as well!

6 going on 16! Zoe is suddenly giving me these smirky poses for pictures 🙂
I mentioned this above… the Child/Teen size fits most! I have made 5 of these hats in that size and they fit so many! Zoe is wearing it in these pictures but it also fits me perfectly. Below you will see my sons teacher and her husband wearing that size as well!

Question regarding joining. Do the chain twos count as a stitch, so would that be the first stitch? I’m confused about where to join at the end of each round. Thank you.
Cindy says
chain 2 does not count as the first stitch, you would want to join in the first crochet stitch, not in the slip st you did your join in. hope this helps

I am trying this hat and although the instructions are pretty clear and easy, but at the step 26 its says we will have with 66 stitches and in step 27-34 it says DC in each stitch and have 60 stitches all together. How can we make 60 stitches out of 66. Hope I am not doing anything wrong.
