Crochet Koala Applique

February 11, 2020

As soon as I made the Crochet Sloth Appliqué, I knew that it could easily be re-worked into a Koala! This project is especially close to our hearts as we are all so worried about the wildfires in Australia. I will be donating the proceeds from this post to help the Koalas in Australia. I am between two organizations and will post about ways to help with a little more research!

Materials:
–Red Heart With Love Yarn in Pewter and Eggshell (I am using Tan for the branch – leaves are using a random green yarn from my yarn stash)
Shop Red Heart Yarn on Yarnspirations.com!
– 10mm Safety Eyes (two)
– Small amount of black yarn for the nose
-Size H Crochet Hook
-Tapestry Needle

Head:
with pewter gray yarn
magic ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Round 3: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Round 4: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 5: SC in each stitch around, fasten off leaving long tail

Ears (make 2):
starting with white yarn
magic ring, chain 2 and make 8 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, (16 SC)
join in gray yarn, chain 1
Round 3: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
Round 4: SC in each stitch around, fasten off leaving long tail

Nose:
with black yarn
chain 5, HDC in second chain from hook, HDC in next, DC in next, 4 DC in last, now working on other side, DC, HDC, HDC, join, fasten off leaving long tail.

Body:
with pewter gray
magic ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, do not join, pull tight, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC in first, 2 SC in next 4, SC in last, chain 1, turn
Row 3: SC in each stitch, chain 1, turn (10 SC)
Row 4: SC in first, 2 SC in next 8, SC in last, chain 1, turn
Row 5: SC in each stitch, chain 1, turn (18 SC)
Row 6: SC in first 5, 2 SC in next, repeat until end of row, chain 1, turn
Row 7: SC in each stitch, chain 1, turn (21 SC)
Row 8: SC in first 6, 2 SC in next, repeat until end of row do not turnworking along flat edge
SC 4, chain 12, DC in 3rd chain from hook and next 3, TC in remaining chains, join with a SC just before the middle of the flat edge, DC, HDC 3, chain 14, HDC in second chain from hook, DC in next 4 chains, TC in remaining chains, join to last stitch in flat edge.
Fasten off leaving long tail

Tree Branch:
with Tan yarn
Chain 40, SC in second chain from hook and next 9, HDC in next 10, DC in next 10, TC in remaining chains, fasten off leaving long tail.

Leaves:
with green
Chain 7, SC in second chain from hook and in next 3, HDC in next, 4 HDC in last, now working on other side, HDC, SC in remaining chain, join, fasten off

Tip: add more starting chains for longer leaves and less starting chains for smaller leaves.

Stitch nose onto middle of head. Add the safety eyes on either side of nose.
Stitch ears behind head so that the head is overlapping the white part of the ear as pictured.

I am thinking of adding two extra legs to the koala before I stitch it onto the blanket… what do you think?

Top Leg: Chain 12, DC in 3rd chain from hook and next 3, TC in remaining chains, fasten off.
Bottom Leg: Chain 14, HDC in second chain from hook, DC in next 4 chains, TC in remaining chains, fasten off

Thank You for such lovely patterns :)) — I thought for sure that I had read somewhere on your site how you sewed the applique onto the blanket mentioning that the sts. didn’t show on the other side??? Maybe I’m dreaming or going crazy-ier, LOL — I can figure it out, just wanted to check to see if I did see/read about that part somewhere on your site or not, ya know what I mean?? Thank you again – Happy Days :))

This pattern was horrible to print. Half the stuff didn’t print or was covered by ads. I had to write most of the pattern down.
