Crochet Halloween Tote Bags

July 15, 2020

Is Halloween cancelled due to Covid? NO it’s not! While my kids probably won’t be trick or treating this year, we are still going to decorate, dress up, and have fun as a family! Fill these Halloween Crochet Tote Bags with small toys or treats for the kids. It will bring a smile to their faces! How about a Halloween Scavenger Hunt inside your house? Use these totes to gather the goodies! Lots of ways to still celebrate!

These totes are based off of my Christmas Tote Bags that I designed as a quick and festive Christmas in July pattern. You can find that post HERE.

Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver Yarn:
Pumpkin and Black for the Jack-O-Lantern
Spring Green and Black for Frankenstein
Black and Medium Purple for the Cat
(use bits of white, gray, yellow, and pink for the embellishments)
Shop all Yarn at Yarnspirations.com

– Size I Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle

The finished size is approximately 11 inches wide by 11 inches tall. 14 inches tall including the handles. They are slightly smaller than my Christmas totes but you can continue to crochet in rounds to make them taller!

NOTE: I used two strands of Red Heart Super Saver Yarn (worsted weight) to crochet these totes. You could use one strand (the overall size would be smaller) but I really recommend crocheting with a double strand. It makes it extremely sturdy and I love how the single crochet stitches fill in so nicely with no holes and less stretching.

There are a few different ways you can crochet with a double strand:
1. You could pull from the middle and outer strand of the skein at the same time (but you are most likely going to run into tangles).
2. You could roll your entire skein into two balls
3. You can buy two skeins and pull from the middle of both skeins at the same time (this is the method I use!)

Here is a video tutorial that covers most of the tote bag design as well as how to crochet some of the embellishments!

Oh my gosh! These are so cute!! I immediately fell in love with your gingerbread man tote bag, and I was so happy that you designed a snowman and a santa belly! You completely made my day when I received the email from you with Halloween tote bags! I know exactly what to make for teacher gifts for Halloween or Christmas or both!

These are so cute! I’d love a fourth option for my four kiddos, do you think a cute ghost or spider tote could be made from the same bag design as say the pumpkin?

I don’t know what I’m doing wrong but with every row I’m getting extra stitches no matter how much I count. Bought the yarn for all three bags and can’t get past the third row. And I’ve watched your video. Doesn’t the first stitch of each row go into the same stitch as the slip stitch?

I am confused on how to crochet on other side of chain. Is it just turn over or is it the underside of chain?
