It’s back to school time! My kids start school on August 4th this year which is much earlier than what we are normally used to. They will be at their new school in Arizona and are excited to be in-person this year and meeting new friends and getting to know their new teachers! We like to bring a little something on the first day for the teachers and I thought this Skinny Crochet Pencil Scarf would be a great gift! It is easy and quick to make using the soft and smooth Caron Simply Soft line of yarn plus it’s a fun and festive accessory!
You will start with the eraser and then work your way to the tip of the pencil. Make it as long or as short as you’d like! There are only 14 stitches across so the repetition is simple. All you need to do is change color!
Materials:
– Caron Simply Soft Yarn:
Watermelon Pink (1 skein)
Gray Heather (1 skein)
Gold (1 skein for 1 scarf – I’d suggest getting two skeins)
Off White (1 skein)
Black (1 skein)

– Size G Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle
To keep things easy in your mind, all you need to do is crochet 12 rows of pink, 10 rows of gray, and 250 rows of gold. Then the tip is just making SC Decreases every two rows. I will walk you through the pattern below.
Skinny Pencil Scarf Pattern:
Starting with pink yarn
Chain 13, 2 SC in second chain from hook, SC until last chain, 2 SC in last chain, chain 1, turn (14 SC)
Row 2-12: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (14 SC)
Change to gray yarn
Row 13-22: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (14 SC)
Change to gold yarn
Row 23-272: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (14 SC)
(feel free to add rows or keep shorter by making less rows of gold)
Change to off white yarn
Row 273-274: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (14 SC)
Row 275: SC Decrease over the first two stitches, SC in each stitch until you get to the last two stitches, SC Decrease over the last two, chain 1, turn
Row 276-277: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (12 SC)
Row 278: SC Decrease over the first two stitches, SC in each stitch until you get to the last two stitches, SC Decrease over the last two, chain 1, turn
Row 279-280: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (10 SC)
281: SC Decrease over the first two stitches, SC in each stitch until you get to the last two stitches, SC Decrease over the last two, chain 1, turn
Row 282-283: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (8 SC)
Row 284: SC Decrease over the first two stitches, SC in each stitch until you get to the last two stitches, SC Decrease over the last two, chain 1, turn
Change to black yarn
Row 285-286: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
Row 287: SC Decrease over the first two stitches, SC in the next two, SC Decrease over the last two, chain 1, turn
Row 288: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
Row 289: SC Decrease twice, chain 1 turn
Row 290: SC twice, fasten off and weave in ends.
You should easily be able to wrap your scarf at least once around the neck. Since the yarn is fairly light weight and the scarf is skinny, you can wear it all year round! Well maybe inside with the AC blasting if you are in this Arizona summer heat 🙂
I love the idea of packaging this up in an easy-to-gift mesh bag. I found these white mesh bags on Amazon and you can buy them in bulk! A great way package any of your smaller crochet projects. You can see what’s inside but it still looks like you took the time to make the presentation nice.
Just roller your scarf up and place it inside the mesh bag!

That’s the same question I want to ask, its only 4 inches , hers looks wider …also are we supposed to be using a 4mm hook
I changed to 5mm (H) hook
I am also using a different yarn (loops and threads, impeccable)
And min is now almost 4.5” wide
Says it is a “skinny” scarf . I will measure mine and let you know. You can always use a bigger hook.
