Horse Crochet Square

February 5, 2023

Howdy! Here is the second square in our Animal Square CAL! Giddy up and grab your yarn to make this Horse! He looks adorable in shades of brown but don’t let my color choices hold you back. Feel free to get creative! I also made a pony and valentine version and I’m sure you could easily make this into a unicorn as well.

If you aren’t familiar with my Animal Square CAL you can read all about it HERE.

Each month (January through December of 2023) I will post a new Crochet Animal Square.  These are simple crochet squares that are embellished with adorable animal faces! These squares work up quickly and won’t take you more than an hour or two. This project is extremely beginner friendly and you can add more or less embellishments. Customize to your liking!

Get the January Polar Bear Square HERE

At the end of the year, I will be stitching these all together to make a blanket! But they could also be turned into a pillow(s), a scarf, or any other creative way you’d like to use them.

Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in colors Cafe Latte (for the main square), Buff Beige (for the mouth), Coffee (for the mane/ears) and a white for the stripe.
Shop Red Heart Super Saver Yarn HERE on Yarnspirations.com

– Size H Crochet hook
– 10mm Safety eyes (optional)
– Tapestry Needle

VIDEO TUTORIAL IS ON MY YOUTUBE CHANNEL.

First let’s make the Square:
With Cafe Latte Brown yarn
Chain 21, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn
Row 2-23: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
now continue making a SC in the 3 sides (2 Chains in each corner)
join in Buff Beige yarn, fasten off Cafe Latte, SC in each stitch all the way around 4 sides making 2 SC in each corner.
Fasten off, weave in ends.

Nose:
With Buff Beige yarn
Chain 10, DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in the next 6, make 4 DC in the last chain, now working on other side of the chain DC in first 7, 4 DC in last, join, chain 1
Round 2: SC in first 7, 2 SC in next, 2 HDC in next, 2 DC in next 11, 2 HDC in next, 2 SC in last, join, fasten off leaving long tail.

Stitch on two nostrils with Coffee brown yarn

White Stripe:
with white yarn
Chain 10, DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in next 3, HDC in next, SC in next 2, SC + Chain 1 + SC in last, now working on other side of chain, SC in first 2, HDC in next, DC in last 5, fasten off leaving long tail

Stitch on white stripe in the middle of square and then the nose below the stripe so it’s just barely overlapping.

Mane:
with Coffee brown yarn
Piece 1: Chain 11, SC in second chain from hook, SC in next, HDC in next 2, DC in remaining chains, fasten off
Piece 2: Chain 9, SC in second chain from hook, SC in next, HDC in next 2, DC in remaining chains, fasten off
Piece 3: Chain 7, SC in second chain from hook, SC in next, HDC in next 2, DC in last two, fasten off

Stitch above white stripe so the 3 pieces are overlapping.

Ears (make 2):
With Coffee brown yarn
chain 5, SC in second chain from hook, HDC in next, DC in last two, join in Cafe Latte brown, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC in first 3, 2 SC in next, SC in last 4, chain 1, turn
Row 3: SC in first 3, 2 SC in next 3, SC in last 3, fasten off

Stitch ears onto upper corners of square

Add two safety eyes or stitch on eyes like I did in my polar bear square

This one is giving me Rainbow Dash/My Little Pony vibes. Add a horn to make a unicorn!

Stop horsing around and be my Valentine!

Thank you for the CAL. Started on the polar bear yesterday and today I finished the horse and a unicorn, which I changed a bit. My husband says the unicorn looks like a pig or cow and my daughter said it’s a unicornhippo. Oh well. I’ll better stick with your instructions the next time 😉

You can’t create something beautiful without inspiration. I get ideas most often when I’m lying and resting on my comfortable mattress and my favorite pillow in a light half-asleep. Often the ideas of others inspire me to create cool things

I love your patterns! You always inspire me. Can you give me an idea on what to do on the back side to cover the post of the safety eyes?
