Ribbit, Ribbit! This Frog Crochet Square is jumping in as the next piece to our Animal Square Crochet-Along! The bright green is the perfect pop of color to our project and our friendly frog is a nice representation of the spring season. As always, this square is made up of easy stitches and embellishments so you will have this crocheted in no time at all!
Each month (January through December of 2023) I will post a new Crochet Animal Square. These are simple crochet squares that are embellished with adorable animal faces! These squares work up quickly and won’t take you more than an hour or two. This project is extremely beginner friendly and you can add more or less embellishments. Customize to your liking!
At the end of the year, I will be stitching these all together to make a blanket! But they could also be turned into a pillow(s), a scarf, or any other creative way you’d like to use them.

Frog Square Pattern:
First let’s make the Square:
With spring green yarn
Chain 21, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn
Row 2-23: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
now continue making a SC in the 3 sides (2 Chains in each corner)
join in darker green yarn, fasten off spring green, SC in each stitch all the way around 4 sides making 2 SC in each corner.
Fasten off weave in ends.
Note: It’s a good idea to measure your square so you know it is in fact square after row 23. Add more or less rows to accommodate if needed. We all crochet with a different tension so size can vary.
Frog Legs (make 2):
with spring green yarn
Chain 11, SC in second chain from hook and in the next 3, HDC in the next 2, DC in the next 3, 4 DC in last, now working on other side of chain, DC in next 4, HDC in next 2, SC in remaining, fasten off.
Join in yarn towards bottom right or left of leg. You want the toes on one side of the leg and then the opposite side for the other.
Chain 2 + DC + chain 2 and join to same stitch, slip stitch over so you working in the next stitch chain 2 + DC + chain 2 and slip stitch to join to same stitch, repeat this one more time making a 3rd toe. Fasten off leaving long tail. Weave in all other ends. You only need one long strand of yarn to stitch frog legs onto square.
Frog Eyes (make 2)
starting with white yarn
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join to first SC, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, join in spring green yarn and chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 3: SC in each stitch around, fasten off leaving long tail. Weave in all other loose ends.
Cheeks (make 2):

Stitch on a smile with black yarn and your tapestry needle then stitch on the cheeks over the ends of the smile.
Place black safety eyes through the crocheted eyes before stitching the eyes down to the square. You can also crochet little black circles for the eyeballs as an alternative to the safety eyes.
In the video I show you how to crochet the pupils of the eyes instead of using a safety eye along with a few other tips and tricks!
