This Crochet Lion Blanket might be one of the easiest baby gifts you will ever make! I am using the Lion Square from my Animal Square Crochet-Along as the center focal point and then crocheting in rounds of double crochet stitches to make the square into a bigger blanket.
I made this for a friend who is due with a baby boy soon. She mentioned that lions are the theme for her nursery. The baby’s name starts with an “A” so I used the Moogly Crochet Alphabet to personalize the back square of the blanket with his initial!
BUT there are sooo many different combinations and possibilities for these animal squares and alphabet letters. Match up an “L” for lion along with other letters/animals from the crochet-along. They could be a part of a larger blanket or even a crochet block toy, wall hanging, and more! Whatever you come up with for your version of this project, I know it will be amazing!
Before starting this blanket you will want to make the >>> LION CROCHET SQUARE <<<
Then make an additional square that can be blanket, or have an alphabet letter on it, or a second Lion square because we will be sandwiching the two squares together.

Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver in Gold, Carrot, Cornmeal, and Cafe Latte.

– Size H Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle
– Lion Crochet Square Pattern
– Moogly Alphabet Pattern (optional)
– Pom-Pom maker
Finished Size: approximately 30 x 30 inches
Note: You can actually make this blanket as big as you’d like just by continuing to crochet in rounds. It’s an easy repetitive pattern! I can be easily made as a couch throw or for an older child or adult!
After you have made the two square (in my case, one is a lion and one is a square with a crochet letter “A” on it) you will place them back to back. The squares are the same base pattern from the animal square CAL.
Yes the backside of the squares will be messy! No worries, because they will be hidden when you crochet the two squares together.
Blanket Pattern:
with the cornmeal color yarn, join in at any corner
Make a chain 3 + DC + chain 2 + 2 DC all in corner, DC along all edges but when you get to the remaining three corners, make 2 DC+ chain 2 + 2 DC all in the corners, join to top of chain 3, chain 2
Rounds 2-5: DC in each stitch around making 2 DC+ chain 2 + 2 DC all in the corners, join to first DC, chain 2
Round 6: join in Cafe Latte yarn after round 5, continue with same pattern: DC in each stitch around making 2 DC+ chain 2 + 2 DC all in the corners, join to first DC,
Round 7-11: join in Carrot Orange yarn and chain 2, continue same pattern: DC in each stitch around making 2 DC+ chain 2 + 2 DC all in the corners, join to first DC, chain 2
Round 12: join in Cafe Latte yarn after round 11, continue with same pattern: DC in each stitch around making 2 DC+ chain 2 + 2 DC all in the corners, join to first DC,
Round 13-17: join in gold yarn and chain 2, continue with same pattern: DC in each stitch around making 2 DC+ chain 2 + 2 DC all in the corners, join to first DC, chain 2
Round 18: join in Cafe Latte yarn after round 17, continue with same pattern: DC in each stitch around making 2 DC+ chain 2 + 2 DC all in the corners, join to first DC, fasten off and weave in ends!
Make 4 pom-poms using a large pom-pom maker and cafe latte yarn. Attach to the 4 corners!

Front side of blanket has the Lion Square but it’s completely reversible!
The backside has the letter “A” square (first initial of the baby name).
