Crochet Striped Sports Team Beanie

I’m starting the New Year with a project for me! My college football team, the University of Washington Huskies, is headed to the National Championship game and to make things even better, they are playing my husbands college team, the University of Michigan Wolverines! We are a house divided and this is the first time my husband and I will be watching our teams play against each other.

If you aren’t a UW or UM fan, that’s ok! You can make this beanie, is your own teams colors. Or any colors of your choosing. This basic striped beanie is quick to crochet and perfect for the winter season.

I am using Bernat Super Value in color Mulberry for the main part of the beanie. I am pairing it with Red Heart with Love in eggshell white and cornsilk for the striped part. It was as close to purple and gold as I could get. But I encourage you to go ahead and choose any colors from your yarn stash that you’d like!

Materials:
– Worsted weight yarn in your team colors! You will need 3 colors: main hat color (purple pictured), white, and the color of your stripe (gold pictured).

RIBBED BORDER:
Please be sure and watch THIS TUTORIAL from my friend Daisy Farm Crafts on how to make a single crochet ribbed border. I love this technique because you don’t need to sew the ribbing on separately, it is crochet right onto the edge of the hat! It’s basically a chain 7 (or however long/short your want your ribbed border), SC in each chain until you get back to the hat edge, slip stitch in two stitches along the hat edge and then SC in the back loops of the ribbing and repeat. She has a VERY easy tutorial to follow and you can use this border on many different projects.

When you’ve finished the ribbed border along the edge of the hat you can slip stitch the seam together.

Add a Pom-Pom! I love THIS multi pack of fur poms from Amazon (affiliate link). They have multiple colors and a little loop underneath that you can sew onto the top of your hat.

I free-handed the “W” so unfortunately I’m not able to provide a pattern for that.
I printed out the logo and made a series of SC and slip stitched lines to create the W.
Another good option for adding a logo is to purchase a iron-on embroidered logo patch of your favorite team: LIKE THIS ONE. Stitch it on with a needle and thread.
