These cute little wide mouth martian crochet sacks are taking the internet by storm in the crochet community! They are lovingly called Yip-Yips because they resemble the puppet characters from the TV show Sesame Street. Hang them around the house or on the rear view mirror in your car. They can hold a variety of trinkets and things! Fun gifts as well!
I posted a version of these Yip-Yips last year using Googly-Eye Plastic Finger Puppets (SEE THE TUTORIAL HERE) but the pattern in this post is completely crocheted and a larger size as well!
This pattern was created by Jennifer Freeman. She is the volunteer admin of my Repeat Crafter Me Crochet FB Group and she has help with writing out directions for my C2C crochet graphs. She sent over this pattern and gave me free reign to edit it and create the tutorial. Thanks Jenny!
Please pop over to her My Beautiful Disasters Etsy or Ravelry shop to see her incredible crochet designs!

Q: What is a Yip-Yip?
A: Yip-Yips are martian characters from the show Sesame Street who were afraid of things like clocks, computers, and telephones. They would hide under the bottom lip of their wide mouth when scared.
Yip-Yip:
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (12 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (18 SC)
Round 4: 2 SC in first, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
Round 5: 2 SC in first, SC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 6: In back loops only for this round, SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 7-13: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 14: SC in first 20, leave the rest of the stitches unworked, chain 1, turn (20 SC)
Row 15-21: SC in each stitch, chain 1, turn (20 SC)
Round 22: SC in each stitch, do not turn, continue to SC around the side of the open rows, along the bottom of the mouth, and up the other side of the open rows. This brings you to the top.
Pinch the top closed and slip stitch in first 4 stitches along top to start closing it. Pause and Chain 24 (or longer for the loop handle) and slip stitch to join along the top seam. Continue to slip stitch the rest of the top closed.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Knot strands of yarn to create fringe along the bottom front loops of round 6. Trim if needed.
Eyes (make 2):
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (12 SC)
Round 3: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (12 SC)
Round 4: SC Decrease around, chain 1
Add safety eyes to middle of magic ring.

It looks to be approximately 3 1/2 inch to 4 inches long to my eye. Happy crocheting.

I’m happy to add these to my repertoire. I’ve been making these for years using another designer’s pattern. I use ping pong balls for the eyes and line the intrerior, since I make these for adults only as gift bags .

Sheri Whitfield says
Why is there an added ch1 at the end of rounds 2-13? Doesn’t look like the original pattern from Jennifer has that. Just curious if it serves a special purpose.
Sheri Whitfield says
Nevermind….I see that you joined and that’s why there’s a chain one, instead of working in the round with no join. My mistake!!
