Big Eyed Birdie Crochet Square

How cute are these BIG-EYED BIRDS?! I was searching for a project I could make with my Large Colorful Crochet Cartoon Eyes and came up with these adorable birdie squares.

UPDATE! The orange birdie has been added to the flock!

Start with a crochet circle that will be come the bird body, an outline with a darker shade of yarn, and then with the background color, we will add corners and turn that circle into a square.

Big Eyed Birdie Square Pattern

Materials:
– You will need 3 different shades of one color.
For the Purple Bird in this tutorial I’m using 3 shades of purple from Red Heart Super Saver: 
Lavender for the center circle
Amethyst for the ring around the circle 
Pale Plum for the background
Additionally you will need Red Heart Super Saver in colors Soft White and Saffron Yellow (beak and feet).
-Size H Crochet Hook
-Tapestry Needle

Green Bird Colors:
RHSS Spring Green, RHSS Paddy Green, Soft Fern (from Bernat Super Value)

Blue Bird Colors:
RHSS Delft Blue, RHSS Royal Blue, RHSS Light Blue

Orange Bird Colors:
RHSS Carrot, RHSS Pumpkin, Red Heart With Love Cornsilk

Finished Size: Approximately 10×10 inches (although some of mine are closer to 11×11 depending on yarn thickness and tension)

Crochet Circle to Square:
Starting with center circle color (Lavender in the example photos – which also matches the eye accent color )
Magic Ring, chain 2 and make 10 DC in ring, join, chain 2 (10 DC)
Round 2: 2 DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (20 DC)
Round 3: 2 DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (40 DC)
Round 4: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next, repeat around (60 DC)
join in darker shade (same color you will use for the wings – Amethyst in example photos), chain 1
Round 5: SC in each stitch around (60 SC)
join in light shade of color (this is your background – Pale Plum in example photos), chain 1
Round 6: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (60 SC)
Round 7: 2 DC + chain 2 + 2 DC in first stitch (this is your first corner), DC in next 14, 2 DC + chain 2 + 2 DC (second corner), DC in next 14, 2 DC + chain 2 + 2 DC (third corner), DC in next 14, 2 DC + chain 2 + 2 DC (fourth corner), DC in last 14 stitches, join, chain 2
Round 8-10: DC in each stitch around making 2 DC + chain 2 + 2 DC in each chain 2 space of the corners, join, chain 2 
after round 10, join in soft white yarn (or whatever color you want for the border of your square) , chain 1
Round 11: SC in each stitch around making 2 SC + chain 2 + 2 SC in each corner, fasten off weave in ends.

Beak:
with saffron yellow yarn
Chain 7, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 2: SC decrease over first two stitches, SC in next 2, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn
Row 3: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (4 SC)
Row 4: SC Decrease two times, chain 1, turn 
Row 5: SC Decrease over remaining two stitches, chain 1 and continue to SC around the edges of the triangle beak, making two SC in the upper two corners. Fasten off leaving long tail to stitch beak onto middle of square, overlapping the eyes.


Wing (left side of body):
with dark color yarn (Amethyst in the example)
Attach yarn with hook to side of circle about 6 stitches up from corner, you will be working over 3 spaces along the edge of the circle.
Chain 3 +  2 TC + chain 3 and slip stitch join to same stitch, slip stitch over to next space along edge of circle, chain 2 + 2 DC + Chain 2 and slip stitch to join all in one stitch, slip stitch over to next space, chain 2 + 2 HDC + chain 2 and slip stitch back to same stitch, fasten off and weave in ends.

Wing (right side of body):
with dark color yarn (Amethyst in the example)
Attach yarn with hook to side of circle about 3 stitches up from corner, you will be working over 3 spaces along the edge of the circle.
chain 2 + 2 HDC + chain 2 and slip stitch join to same stitch, slip stitch over to next space along edge of circle, chain 2 + 2 DC + Chain 2 and slip stitch to join all in one stitch, slip stitch over to next space, 2Chain 3 +  2 TC + chain 3  and slip stitch back to same stitch, fasten off and weave in ends.

Feet:
space feet out about 5 stitches apart along bottom of circle.
with saffron yellow yarn, join in along edge of circle, chain 1 + SC + DC + SC + chain 1 and join with a slip stitch back to same stitch, fasten off, weave in ends.
Make a second foot the same way.

Birds of a feather flock together! Make as many birds as your heart desires. They can be stitched together to create a blanket, tote bag, wall hanging and more.
You could also make squares in a solid color to pair with the birds for a large blanket.
