Because even the littlest ogres need a costume! This sweet crochet set includes a newborn-sized Green Ogre Hat (with those iconic ears!) and a pair of matching cozy baby booties. Perfect for newborn photos, Halloween costumes, or a whimsical baby shower gift.
I used Red Heart Super Saver in Spring Green, the same yarn as my family-sized ogre hats, so everything coordinates perfectly. The hat is sized specifically for newborns (although I’m sure it would fit up to 3 months), and the booties have plenty of stretch to keep little feet snug without being too tight.
This set is beginner-friendly, quick to make, and oh-so-cute on the tiniest Shrek fans. Whether you’re welcoming a Halloween baby, celebrating a theatre production, or just want a unique handmade gift, this pattern is for you!
Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver in color Spring Green

– Tapestry Needle
0-3 Month Size Hat Pattern:
Magic ring, chain 2 and make 11 DC in magic ring, join to first DC, chain 2
Round 2: 2 DC in each around, join, chain 2 (22 DC)
Round 3: 2 DC in first, DC in next, repeat around, join, chain 2 (33 DC)
Round 4: 2 DC in first, DC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 2 (44 DC)
Round 5-8: DC in each around, join, chain 2 (44 DC)
After round 8, chain 6, now let’s create the ribbed edge using the back loop SC ribbed border technique. SC in each chain until you get back to the hat edge, slip stitch in two stitches along the hat edge and then SC in the back loops of the ribbing and repeat. When you get back to the start of the ribbed edge, join the two edges by slip stitching them together with your hook or weaving the edges together with the yarn tail and your tapestry needle.
Green Ogre Ears Pattern (make 2):
Note: Leave a long tail at the start of magic ring
Magic Ring, chain 2 and make 10 DC in ring, join to first DC, chain 2
Round 2: DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (10 DC)
Round 3: DC Decrease, DC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1 (8 DC)
Round 4: SC in each stitch around, join, fasten off leaving long tail (8 DC)
Ear Attachment:
Each ear is shaped by creating a little indent at the top, which gives it that signature ogre look. To do this, take the long tail from the starting magic ring (the inside center of the ear) and pull it downward. As you pull, you’ll see the top of the ear pinch in to form the indent. Stitch this tail down tightly to the hat first — this secures the shape and keeps the indent from popping back out.
Once the top is secured, use the long tail from the final round of the ear to sew the bottom edge of the ear against the hat. Position the ears about 4 rounds down from top.
Crochet Baby Booties Pattern
Size: Newborn (and up to 3 month)
Chain 8, SC in second chain from hook and in next 5, make 4 SC in last stitch, now working on other side of chain, SC 7, join to first SC, ch 1.
Round 2: 2 SC in first two stitches, SC in next 4, 2 HDC in next 5, SC in next 4, 2 SC in last two, join, ch 1
Round 3: SC in next 10, 2 SC in next 6, SC in last 10, join, ch 1
Round 4: Working in back loops only, SC in each stitch around, join, ch 1 (32 SC)
Round 5: Now working in both loops, SC in each stitch around, join, ch 1 (32 SC)
Round 6: SC in next 10, SC decrease 6 times, SC in last 10, join, ch 1
Round 7: SC in next 8, SC decrease 5 times, SC in last 8, join, ch 1
Round 8: SC in next 8, SC decrease in next 3, SC in next 7, join, ch 1
Round 9: SC in each stitch around, join, (18 SC)
Round 10: Chain 9, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain…
now let’s create the ribbed edge of the booties using the back loop SC ribbed border technique. SC in each chain until you get back to the hat edge, slip stitch in two stitches along the hat edge and then SC in the back loops of the ribbing and repeat. When you get back to the start of the ribbed edge, join the two edges by slip stitching them together with your hook or weaving the edges together with the yarn tail and your tapestry needle.
Fold the ribbed edge over to create a cute cuff!
