Looking for a quick and fun crochet project that doubles as a costume piece? This Green Ogre Hat is just the thing!
Zoe has joined the cast of Shrek Jr. at Phoenix Youth Theatre, and I designed these playful ogre hats to help with fundraising for their April show (my goal is to make 50!). They’re beginner-friendly, whip up fast, and make the perfect accessory for Halloween costumes, themed parties, or dress-up time.

This pattern uses Red Heart Super Saver Jumbo in Spring Green (396g skein), the perfect bright ogre color. The hat comes in three flexible sizes: Small (baby/toddler), Medium (child), and Large (teen/adult). If I’m calculating this correctly, it looks like you can make up to nine hats (about two in each size) from just one jumbo ball of yarn!
And the best part? The yarn is on sale for only $6 right now during the Yarnspirations sitewide sale! That’s enough to make a whole bunch of ogre hats for your family, friends, or fundraiser at less than $1 per hat. Get the yarn HERE on Yarnspirations.com. NOTE: discount is applied when you add it to your cart.
This pattern includes three flexible sizes: Small (Baby/Toddler), Medium (Child), and Large (Teen/Adult). The beauty of crocheted hats made with Red Heart Super Saver is how much stretch and give they have. The stitches naturally form and adjust to the shape of your head, making each size very forgiving.

For example, I can comfortably wear the teen/adult size, and so can all my kids (ages 12, 14, and 16). Zoe can even slip into the child size without an issue. The baby/toddler size is best for the littlest ogres, but overall you’ll find that each hat stretches to fit and feels snug without being tight.

SC in each chain until you get back to the hat edge, slip stitch in two stitches along the hat edge and then SC in the back loops of the ribbing and repeat. When you get back to the start of the ribbed edge, join the two edges by slip stitching them together with your hook or weaving the edges together with the yarn tail and your tapestry needle.

If you are having trouble with the SC Ribbed Border Technique, my friend Tiffany at Daisy Farm Crafts has a VERY easy tutorial to follow and you can use this border on many different projects.

Ears (make 2):
Note: Leave a long tail at the start of magic ring
Magic Ring, chain 2 and make 12 DC in ring, join to first DC, chain 2
Round 2-3: DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (12 DC)
Round 4: DC Decrease, DC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (8 DC)
Round 5: DC in each stitch around, join, fasten off leaving long tail (8 DC)
Ear Attachment:
Each ear is shaped by creating a little indent at the top, which gives it that signature ogre look. To do this, take the long tail from the starting magic ring (the inside center of the ear) and pull it downward. As you pull, you’ll see the top of the ear pinch in to form the indent. Stitch this tail down tightly to the hat first — this secures the shape and keeps the indent from popping back out.
Once the top is secured, use the long tail from the final round of the ear to sew the bottom edge of the ear against the hat. Position the ears about:
- 7 rounds down from the top for the Large (Teen/Adult) size
- 5 rounds down for the Medium (Child) size
- 4 rounds down for the Small (Baby/Toddler) size
Weave in any remaining ends neatly on the inside of the hat. Repeat on the other side, and your ogre ears are complete!

And that’s it! Your very own Green Ogre Hat! With sizes for baby through adult, you can make a whole family of ogres just like Shrek, Fiona, and their little ones in the swamp. Perfect for Halloween, a theater production, or just a bit of fairy-tale fun at home. I can’t wait to see your creations, be sure to share them with me by tagging #RepeatCrafterMe!
