Crochet Granny Square Evergreen Trees

Turn those solid green granny squares into evergreen trees! Last week I showed you how to make granny square Christmas tree ornaments with the new Red Heart All in One Granny Square Yarn but you can also make your granny squares with any shade of green from Red Heart Super Saver and turn them into evergreen trees.

Make a whole forest! These work really well as ornaments, gift toppers, and more! The snowflake button on top makes it a wintery wonderland of cuteness.

You can create small trees or big trees depending on how many rounds you add to your basic granny square.

Use your favorite granny square pattern or use the pattern posted below!

Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in colors Paddy Green, Spring Green, Tea Leaf, and Medium Thyme.
Shop these shades on Yarnspirations.com
– Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Cafe Latte Brown. You only need a bit for the tree trunk.
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle
– Snowflake Buttons. I got the ones pictured HERE at JOANN.

Basic Granny Square Pattern:
Round 1: Magic Ring, chain 3 (this counts as your first DC) + 2 DC, chain 2, 3 DC, chain 2, 3 DC, chain 2, 3 DC, chain 2 and join to the top of your chain 3, turn
Round 2: slip stitch so you are working in the chain 2 space, Chain 3 (counts as DC) + 2 DC + chain 2 + 3 DC all in chain 2 space, chain 1, now working in next chain 2 space, 3 DC + chain 2 + 3 DC, chain 1, working in next chain 2 space, 3 DC + chain 2 + 3 DC, chain 1, working in next chain 2 space, 3 DC + chain 2 + 3 DC, chain 1 and join to the top of the chain 3, turn
Round 3: slip stitch so you are working in the chain 1 space, chain 3 (counts as DC)+ 2 DC in chain 1 space, chain 1, now working the chain 2 corner space, 3 DC + chain 2 + 3 DC, chain 1, 3 DC in next space, chain 1, 3 DC + chain 2 + 3 DC in corner, 3 DC in next space, chain 1, 3 DC + chain 2 + 3 DC in corner, chain 1, 3 DC in next space, chain 1, 3 DC + chain 2 + 3 DC in corner, chain 1 and join to the top of the chain 3, turn
Remaining Rounds: continue pattern as written in Round 3. As your granny square gets bigger, each round will have an additional chain 1 space along the edges where you will make 3 DC. Be sure to chain 1 between the granny clusters and chain 2 between the clusters in the corners.

When you are finished making your granny square the size you want, fasten off and leave a long tail that you will use to stitch it into a tree shape and create a loop at the top.

A few easy folds and your square becomes a triangle!

Stitch up the folds with your tapestry needle.

Create a loop at the top!

Attach brown yarn at the middle space of the bottom of the tree: Chain 3 + 4 DC + chain 3 and slip stitch to join to the same space. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Add a Snowflake button on top of your tree! Stitch it on or use a dab of hot glue.

The easiest evergreens you will ever create!
