Winter Activities CAL: Square Colors and Blanket Details

January 26, 2026

I’ve had lots of requests for the yarn colors I used for my Winter Activities Crochet Along (CAL) squares, so I wanted to put everything in one place! This post covers the base granny square colors, yarn amounts, sizing, and my plan for turning these squares into a finished blanket.

The appliqué colors will come month-to-month as we crochet through the year, so think of this as the foundation guidefor the blanket itself.

Yarn Used

All of my 10×10 inch base squares are made with: Red Heart Super Saver Yarn. It’s durable, easy to care for, and perfect for a blanket that will be handled, used, and loved all winter long.
>>> Shop all the Shades of Red Heart Super Saver HERE on Yarnspirations.com <<<

Square Colors (in order)

I chose a grouping of cool tones (blues, purples, and soft neutral grays) to match my original vision board for this winter-themed project. Here are the 12 colors I used, in order:

  1. Turqua
  2. Pool Blue
  3. Lavender
  4. Minty
  5. Delft Blue
  6. Dusty Grey
  7. Orchid
  8. Royal
  9. Dark Orchid
  10. Country Blue
  11. Oatmeal
  12. Jade

This combination gives a frosty, winter feel but please remember: You can absolutely use whatever colors you have in your stash! Your blanket can be bold, pastel, neutral, scrappy. It’s all part of making it your own.

Square Pattern

All of the base squares use my Easy Double Crochet Solid Granny Square pattern.

>>> You can find the free Double Crochet Solid Granny Square pattern HERE <<<
These squares have a more solid look than traditional open granny squares, but still keep that classic square construction.

Blanket Size (So Far!)

Right now, my 12 squares are not stitched together yet. Sitting side by side, they measure approximately: 30 x 40 inches

Once the squares are joined and a border is added, the blanket will grow larger, making it a great lap blanket or throw size.

Yarn Amount Per Square

Each square uses approximately: 1.3 oz (40g or less)
A skein of Red Heart Super Saver contains: 7 oz (198g)

So you do not need anywhere near a full skein for each square. You can get multiple squares from one ball, which makes this project very stash-friendly.

Blanket Backing Plan (Fleece!)

Since this blanket will have appliqués sewn onto each square, the back of the blanket will naturally start to look a little messy and that’s completely normal!

You’ll likely see:

  • stitching from sewing on the appliqués
  • yarn tails that have been woven in
  • extra strands from securing pieces

All of that is part of attaching layered crochet pieces… but we don’t want those threads exposed on the finished blanket. So we’re going to cover it up in a cute and cozy way!

Instead of crocheting a second set of squares and stitching them together (which would double the work), I love the idea of adding a soft fleece fabric backing.

I’m on the hunt for the perfect winter-themed fleece. I’m thinking snowflakes on a blue background to match the cool color palette. Once I find the right fabric, I’ll share it with you!
Solid color fleece fabric that is sold by the yard is also an option. Something LIKE THIS from Walmart.

To attach the fleece, I’ll use my rotary cutter and Skip Stitch Blade to cut small holes along the edge of the fleece that my hook can fit through. Then I’ll crochet the fleece and the crocheted blanket together around the border. This creates a polished finish and hides all of those applique stitches on the back.

I’ve used this method before on projects like my reindeer blanket, and it works beautifully.

If you’re curious to about how to use the rotary cutter to cute holes in the fabric I have a full tutorial on this HERE. Of course I will create a new tutorial on how to attach the fleece to this winter activities blanket towards the end of the year when we are ready for it.

What About the Appliqués?

The fun part of this CAL is that the appliqués (ice skates, winter gear, snow-themed designs, and more!) will be added month by month.

The appliqués will feature a variety of colors, depending on the design each month. The good news is they’re small (most are around 6 x 6 inches) so they don’t take much yarn at all. There’s a good chance you already have many of the colors you’ll need for the appliqués in your stash!

This blanket is really coming together, and I love seeing everyone’s color choices already. Whether you follow this exact palette or go totally rogue with your stash, it’s going to be such a special winter project.

Stay tuned. the appliqués are where the personality really starts to shine!

Hi, thank you for sharing this setup — I will definitely use it. By the way, I recently found a really good gaming https://bookofdeadslot.co.uk/ website. One of the games takes players on an exciting journey to the very heart of Ancient Egypt. This slot from Play’n GO offers free spins and multiplier features. The game stands out for its impressive design and simple mechanics. Book of Dead is suitable for both beginners and experienced players. For users in the UK, slots with traditional mechanics and a minimal number of extra elements are usually the most convenient choice. When bonuses are activated in familiar ways and the symbols remain recognizable, the process feels more structured. This reduces tension and allows players to focus on the rhythm of the game, making leisure time light and enjoyable.

Okay, so a whole *winter activities* page dedicated to colors and blankets? My brain is officially doing a happy little jig. Looks like someone’s got a serious yarn addiction… in the best way possible, of course! 🙂 ”

I’ve done a few ACH purchases myself, and the key is using a platform that clearly shows all the steps and fees upfront. One I’ve found really straightforward is https://paybis.com/buy-bitcoin-with-ach-transfer/. You just enter the amount of BTC you want, link your bank via ACH, and it shows exactly how much USD you’ll be charged before confirming. What’s nice is that everything is transparent — the rates and processing times are clear, and the Bitcoin is sent to your wallet once the transfer is complete. For beginners, this makes buying BTC via ACH much less stressful compared to trying to figure it out on your own with multiple exchanges.
