Crochet Zebra Wreath

August 1, 2014

If you follow me on Instagram you’ve been seeing bits and pieces of this project over the past week. And here it is in its entirety! I made this Zebra Wreath for my daughters bedroom door but it also will go on our front door at her zebra-themed birthday party next month. The best part about this pattern is that just by changing the colors (and in some cases slightly tweaking the pattern) you can create a whole zoo of animals! You could easily convert this into a giraffe, tiger, lion, cow, horse, unicorn, cheetah, puppy dog, and more! In fact, I used the same face as my puppy dog lovey blanket! Which brings me to another idea… you could use any of the appendages from my Lovey Blanket patterns and attach them onto a wreath instead of the blanket! Choose from a Monster, Puppy, Robot, Owl, Love Bug, and Dinosaur. Or create your own version of this wreath!

Materials:
– Worsted weight yarn in black and white. I used almost exactly one skein of each color of Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in black and white with a little bit of pink poodle for the hair bow.
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Poly-fil stuffing
– Tapestry Needle
– 12 inch round styrofoam wreath (I purchased mine at Michaels craft store)
– Two small black buttons for eyes
– Wood Pennant Flags (found them at Michaels craft store for 29 cents each)

Abbreviations:
Ch = Chain
SC = Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
HDC Decrease = Half Double Crochet Decrease
Sl St = Slip Stitch

Wreath Cover:
Starting with white
Chain 21,
Row 2: SC in second chain from hook and in each stitch across (20 SC)
Change to black
Row 3: SC in each stitch across, ch 2, turn
Row 4: DC in first 10 stitches, SC in last 10
Change to white and ch 2
Row 5: DC in first 10, SC in last 10, ch 1, turn
Row 6: SC in each stitch across
Change to black and ch 1
Row 7: SC in each stitch across, ch 1, turn
Row 8: SC in first 10, DC in last 10,
Change to white, ch 1
Row 9: SC in first 10, DC in last 10, ch 1, turn
Row 10: SC in each stitch across
Repeat Rows 3-10 until you have 95 rows. Don’t worry about being exact.  But you will want to end on a white row to join with the white row in the beginning.

Here is a video tutorial on how to crochet the zebra stripes

To make a solid wreath cover: follow the pattern used in my Summer Sun Wreath. You could easily add on giraffe or cow spots or just leave it a solid color. To crochet giraffe spots follow the pattern from Giraffe Hat and to crochet cow spots follow the pattern from my Cow Hat.

When you wrap your crocheted strip around the wreath make sure your rows match up (as best you can). Now take your tapestry needle and start stitch it together. It always looks like it won’t work out, but keep going and it will all come together with no lumps or bumps at the end. I promise!

Stitch together the ends to close it up.

Zebra Head: (Make 2)
Guess what… this is pretty much the exact same pattern as the head from my Puppy Dog Lovey 🙂

Starting with white yarn
Chain 9, HDC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC across, chain 1, turn
Row 2: 2 HDC, HDC in next 6, 2 HDC in last stitch, (10 HDC), chain 1, turn
Row 3-4: HDC across (10 HDC), chain 1, turn

switch to black for row 4 to create a stripe. Feel free to vary your stitches [example: DC in first 5, SC in last 5]. switch back to white for row 5
Row 5: HDC decrease, HDC in next 6, HDC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 6: HDC across (8 HDC), chain 1, turn
Row 7: 2 HDC in first st, HDC in next 6, 2 HDC in last, chain 1, turn
Row 8: 2 HDC in first st, HDC in next 8, 2 HDC in last, chain 1, turn
Row 9: 2 HDC in first st, HDC in next 10, 2 HDC in last, chain 1, turn
Change to black yarn
Row 10-11: HDC across (14 HDC), chain 1, turn
Row 12: HDC decrease, HDC in next 10, HDC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 13: HDC across (12 HDC)
Row 14: HDC decrease, HDC in next 8, HDC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 15: HDC across (10 HDC), continue to SC around entire head, slip stitch to join, fasten off, weave in ends.
One one of the head pieces, add black eyes and stitch on two white x’s for the nostrils.

Stitch together head pieces and add in poly-fil stuffing right before completely closing.
Stitch on ears (pattern below) and attach hair for the mane by looping long strands of black through the top stitches of the zebra head. Pull tight and trim.
Want to add a little crochet bow? Follow the pattern at the bottom of my Gingerbread Hat Pattern.

Zebra Ears: (Make 2)
starting with white yarn

Chain 5, SC in 2nd chain from hook and in remaining chains, ch1, turn (4 SC)
Row 2: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next two, 2 SC in last stitch, ch 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 3-5:
SC in each stitch across, ch 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 6:
SC Decrease, SC in next two, SC decrease, ch 1, turn
Row 7:
SC in each stitch across, ch 1, turn (4 SC)
Row 8:
 Make 2 SC decreases,
attach black yarn and continue to SC around entire ear. Fasten off leaving long tail to sew onto hat.

Zebra Hoofs: (make 4)
Chain 7, SC in 2nd chain for hook and down chain, ch 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 2-4: SC in each stitch across, ch 1, turn (6 SC)
Change to black
Row 5: SC in each stitch across, ch 2, turn (6 SC)
Row 8: DC in first 3, SC in last 3, (6 stitches)
Change to white yarn and ch 2, turn
Row 9: DC in first 3, SC in last 3
Row 10: SC in each stitch across
Change to black yarn
Row 11: 2 SC in first, SC in next 4, 2 SC in last, ch 1, turn (8 SC)
Row 12-15: SC in each stitch across, ch 1, turn (8 SC)
continue to SC around entire hoof. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Optional: Make 4 more hoofs  (for a total of 8) stitch 2 together like you did for the zebra head and stuff lightly with poly-fil. Or you can leave flat and sew onto wreath as I did.

At this point you will want to sew all appendages onto the wreath.

You can leave as is (so cute right?!) Or you can add a name banner or initials. Follow the tutorial from my Summer Sun Wreath on how to add a name banner and where to get the supplies for this.
Now you are finished! Hang on door using a Command Hook or any kind of towel hanger hook or even a traditional wreath hanger.
Can’t wait to see all of your crochet bedroom door wreaths! It’s the perfect (and cutest) sign for your little ones room. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Help,I can't figure out where I'm going wrong on the wreath pattern. All my dc are winding up on the same side,so I have stripes instead of it swapping sides. Thank you for all you do. I just can't figure out where I'm messing it up,lol. Ellen

Hmmm. I just tried the pattern as I had written it and it seems to be working. Going to try and make a quick video of the first 10 rows today! I made a slight edit to the chain row so it reads better but I don't think that was the problem. We will figure this out!

Oh my goodness, I figured it out! It is so subtle but makes all the difference 🙂 So sorry! It's in row 8 and 9… you want to SC in the first 10 and then DC in the last 10 (instead of making DC and then SC like you did in rows 4 and 5). I updated the pattern so all should be well now. I will still make the video!! Thanks for saying something. Took me a couple tries to figure out what I wrote wrong 🙂

On the hoofs the rows jump from 5 to row 8. Is 6 and 7 missing. I realized it after I made all four of them.
