Crochet Sea Turtle Plushie

Here is the second project in my Crochet Cartoon Eye series! This time I used the smaller version of the cartoon eyes and made a Sea Turtle. Yes, there are now two sizing options for the eye pattern! The larger original pattern is about 2 inches in diameter and the smaller eyes as seen on the sea turtle are about 1 inch in diameter.

This super cute sea turtle is an adaptation of my Bernat Blanket Sea Turtle Pattern (SEE IT HERE). This one is made with Red Heart Super Saver worsted weight yarn and measures about 11 x 11 in inches from head to tail and flipper to flipper across. The shell is about 7 inches in width.

Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver yarn in colors Spring Green (shell) and Frosty Green (all other parts)

Red Heart Sea Turtle with Cartoon Eyes Pattern:

Top of Shell:
with spring green yarn
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 4: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 5: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (40 SC)
Round 6: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (40 SC)
Round 7: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1 (50 SC)
Round 8: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (50 SC)
Round 9: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 4, repeat around, join, chain 1 (60 SC)
Round10: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (60 SC)
Round 11: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 5, repeat around, join, chain 1 (70 SC)
Round 12: SC in each stitch around, join chain 1 (70 SC)
Round 13: IN FRONT LOOPS ONLY, SC in each stitch around, join (70 SC)
fasten off, weave in ends. You will use the BACK LOOPS later.

Bottom of Shell:
with frosty green yarn
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 4: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 5: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (40 SC)
Round 6: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (40 SC)
Round 7: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1 (50 SC)
Round 8: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (50 SC)
Round 9: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 4, repeat around, join, chain 1 (60 SC)
Round 10: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 5, repeat around, join, (70 SC)
Fasten off leaving long tail
Note: You will want to attach the head, flippers, and tail to the bottom shell before joining the top and bottom shells together.

Head:
with frosty green yarn
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 3: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 4: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 5-7: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 8: SC Decrease, SC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
Round 9: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
Round 10: SC Decrease, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain1 (18 SC)
Round 11-13: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (18 SC)
Round 14: SC Decrease, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (12 SC)
Round 15-16: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (12 SC)
Fasten off after round 16 and leave long tail.
Sew on cartoon crochet eyes to front of head.
Stuff with poly-fil.

Flippers (make 4):
with frosty green yarn
Round 1: Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 8 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (16 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
Round 4: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (32 SC)
Round 5: SC in each stitch around, join, fasten off leaving long tail (32 SC)
Fold in half and pinch closed. Stuff lightly with poly-fil. 
Use your tapestry needle to stitch the flipper closed. 
Leave tail attached to then stitch all 4 of the flippers onto the bottom of the shell.

Tail: 
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (6 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (8 SC)
Round 4: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (8 SC)
Round 5: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1 (10 SC)
Round 6: SC in each stitch around, join, fasten off leaving long tail (10 SC)
No need to stuff tail. 
Pinch opening closed and stitch onto bottom of shell, opposite from head.

When attaching the head/flippers/tail, try to work your needle at least one row below the edge of the shell. You will need the stitches from the last row later to attach to sew the bottom and top of shell together.

Feel free to leave the ends a big long. They are going to be hidden inside the turtle.

Lay the top of shell and bottom shell together. They have the same amount of stitches so they should match up.

You are going to be working your tapestry needle in the unused back loops of Round 13 of your top shell and the edge stitches of your bottom shell. Stuff with poly-fil as you go!

Belly up!

Pay attention to detail! The flippers can be put on either way (with the curved edge facing front or backwards) just make sure they are consistent.

The cartoon eyes can be stitched on with the “eye sparkle” on the bottom of the eye or in the corner or at the top! It’s gives it a different expression with different placements.
