Just add eyelids! Transform those Cartoon Eyes into sleepy eyes with the addition of crocheted eyelids. That’s all there is to it! They give these eyes so much character and make them even more versatile.
To begin this project, you will need to make the Crochet Cartoon Eyes. I have a very detailed tutorial and video on how to make the Cartoon Eyes HERE.

Then you will crochet the Eyelids separately. Pattern below!
You will want to match the eyelids color as close as you can to the project you are stitching them onto. The eyelids should be the same color as “the face.” For instance, my Star Blanket is color Sunsoaked Yellow from the Bernat Blanket line of yarn. So I chose Red Heart Super Saver in color Saffron Yellow for the eyelids to match.
The color of the eyes should not be the exact some color as the eyelid. I chose coordinating colors but they could be completely different (i.e. blue eyes with yellow eyelids).
Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver in any color that will closely match the face or background of the project you are stitching the eyes to.
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle
Crochet Eyelids (Make 2):
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, do not join, pull tight to create a half circle, chain 1 turn
Row 2: SC in first stitch, 2 SC in next, repeat until end of row, chain 1, turn (9 SC)
Row 3: SC in first 2 stitches, 2 SC in next, repeat until end of row, chain 1, do not turn (12 SC)
SC along bottom straight edge of eyelid. You should have about 6 SC along the bottom, fasten off leaving long tail.
Overlap eyelids on the cartoon eyes so they are slanted slightly upward. Be sure the little “twinkle” in the eye is still visible under the eyelid.
You will want to stitch your cartoon eye onto your project (I am currently using them on THIS STAR BLANKET) and then stitch the eyelids overtop of the cartoon eye.
And if you’re working on a reversible project like this Star Blanket, you can add a second set of eyes to the back! One side could be sleepy and the other side could be bright-eyed!
How about ANGRY EYES?!
Turn those eyelids the other direction and you can a completely different look!
