Crochet Granny Square Ornament Ball Baubles

August 13, 2024

Granny Square Baubles made easy with an inflatable 6 inch ball! With just two granny squares made from Red Heart All-in-One Granny Square Yarn stitched around a mini clear beach ball, you can create seasonal and holiday themed baubles! Perfect for decorating your home and office.

These ornament balls would look fabulous strung across a mantel, on a Christmas tree, hanging from a door, and placed in trays or cylinders for table decor!

There are so many fun color ways to the Red Heart All-in-One Granny Square line of yarn. New shades have been added this month! I just ordered the Ruby Red and Verdant Vine to make Christmas baubles! See all colors HERE on Yarnspirations.com. This granny square yarn has pre-set color changes built right into each skein so you don’t need to fasten off your yarn and add in a new strand. Let the yarn do the work for you!

The key component to these adorable granny square balls are the mini inflatable beach balls! I purchased these on Amazon in a 24 pack for about $20 so they are less than a dollar each. You can blow them up as much or as little as you’d like. You can even leave them mostly deflated for the Pumpkin Granny Square pattern I posted a few days ago (SEE IT HERE).

The balls come in a variety of colors if you would prefer black, gold, orange, or pink to show through the spaces in the granny square stitches.

Materials:
– Red Heart All in One Granny Square Yarn in color Warm Wheat
>>> Shop Red Heart All-in-One Granny Square Yarn HERE <<<
– Size H Crochet Hook
– 6 inch clear inflatable balls. SHOP HERE ON AMAZON for the clear inflatable 6 inch balls  (affiliate link) If you make a purchase through links on our site, we may earn a commission
– Tapestry Needle

The basic granny square pattern is on the back of the label on each ball and Yarnspirations also has a helpful video tutorial RIGHT HERE for you to follow.

I made two slight changes to the last round of the granny square.
In the middle stitch of each side of the last round, I made a slip stitch instead of 3 double crochets.
This gives a little dip in each of the 4 sides that help the two squares fit together. It also gives you extra length to the tail of the last color when you fasten off, which you need to stitch the two squares together.
Next, I made 6 DC in each corner. I did not include the chain 2 in the corners of the last round.

Place the two squares on top of each other so the corners of one square fit into the dips of the other.

Start stitching together with the remaining tails of yarn and your tapestry needle. It helps to work in the back loops of the edge stitches.

Before you stitch closed, slightly blow up your ball and stuff in between the granny squares.

Make sure the valve of the inflatable ball is sticking out of one of the granny square spaces.
Finish stitching the squares together around the ball.

Finish blowing up the ball and tuck the valve in behind any of the crochet stitches.
Make a loop handle by chaining 25 with the remaining loose end of yarn!

Let the air back out if you want to store this for use next year!

Are these supposed to be ornaments, or beach ball covers?

I am not sure what I have done wrong, but my squares don’t cover my balls. Do you blow your balls up all the way?
